Taking off with Beginning Readers
When my children were just learning their letters I looked for books that would help to launch them onto the road to reading. I looked for books that had a good storyline, beautiful illustrations and limited vocabulary. It was difficult to find all three so I wanted to share with you the very best beginning readers that we found.
Red Nose Readers are a series of Emergent Readers written by Allan Ahlberg and Charles McNaughto. Each little book has beautiful illustrations, limited vocabulary and story lines so funny that your child won't be about to resist reading them over and over to every member of the family.
Red Nose Readers will intrigue even the most reluctant beginning reader.
What are Emergent Readers?
Emergent Readers are those books that your child is ready to read when they know the sounds of most or all the letters and are beginning to be able to sound out simple words. Emergent Readers have only one or two sentences per page will illustrations that help children to anticipate the words of the text. These beginning readers will help your child to take off on the road to reading.

Fee Fi Fo Fum (Red Nose Readers)
Simple text and illustrations demonstrate in brief vignettes such concepts as cause and effect, adding, parts of a whole, opposites, and the meaning of words.
Red Nose Readers
The easiest of easy readers - and the funniest! "Children fortunate enough to encounter this dotty reading scheme have been found banging on the bookcase and shouting for more".

- Review of Happy Worm
- Happy Worm is the lead "story (of 4) in this little book.
Each page of this story has two pictures (top and bottom), and each picture is described with three words.
The first picture is of a smiling worm and the words say "a happy worm." In the next frame we see the same worm about to be snatched in a bird's beak and the words "a sad worm."
Then we see the bird with the worm in her mouth ("a happy bird"), followed by the bird (who has dropped the worm) under a cat's paw ("a sad bird").
The cat walks... - Tell us a snorey
- You only have to look at Allan Ahlberg's brilliant Red Nose Readers to see what magic he can create using single words and phrases.
“These brilliantly conceived books manage to make humorous little stories out of half a dozen words.”
Beginning to Read with Emergent Readers
From Emergent Readers to Lifetime Readers
When my children began to read, I looked for beginning readers that would capture their attention in order to help them develop a love of reading that would last a lifetime. I found that in Red Nose Readers. These funny little books are a pleasure for both adults and children. Showing children how much pleasure that you derive from reading is essential to developing a lifetime love of reading.
When your child begins to read, ask him ore her to choose a word, sentence or page to read to you. Very gradually add more. Even after your child is able to read a story aloud it is important to continue reading to him or her. I still read aloud with my teenagers. Reading aloud is pleasurable and that pleasure is what will assure lifelong readers.
Red Nose Readers will help your emergent reader take off to a lifetime of reading pleasure.

- Wonderful choice of books. Our family will be forever grateful to Brandon's second grade teacher Mrs. ???...grrs at escaping her name, yet I see her face, remember her always being at Gales Creek Elementary PTO meetings and events. He broke out and started reading even the wrapping on toilet rolls :) Love what you do here Evelyn, thank you!

- The Beginning to Read series was always a favorite -- I Wish that I Had Duck Feet, Go, Dog Go, etc. When children begin to read is such an exciting time.

- I have always loved the Beginning to Read series as well but found that it was too difficult at the very beginning. That is when I discovered the Red Nose Readers. Once children can read the Red Nose Readers they can easily start on the Beginning to Read books such as Go, Dog, Go or Hop on Pop.
