Emery Cat
Why do cats scratch? It is a natural act for cats to scratch in order to keep their claws sharp for hunting prey. But if you have an indoor cat like I do, you do not want them to scratch your furniture. There are several ways to stop them from scratching your furniture.
1. Put aluminum foil or double sided tape on your furniture, not all over but on the corners.
2. Have a can with coins in it handy. When you see your cat scratching your furniture, shake the can to scare your cat. Soon he will associate the noise with scratching your furniture and stop.
3. Your cat is always going to scratch, so when you are doing item 1 and 2, provide your cat an alternative to sharpen their claws. A good scratch pad will work well like the Emery Cat!!

Emery Cat
The Emery Cat scratcher will save your furniture. It does this by attracting your cat to the scratcher, I use catnip, and allowing your cat to use the emery board. This allows your cat to give itself its own pedicure. The secret is that the surface is honeycomb like a nail file which files away the sharpness of your cats claws. This board is infused with catnip, to keep your kitty coming back saving your furniture.I have three of these one for each one. They love it and I love the way it saves my furniture. Plus they are relatively cheap, you will get two for a little over 19 dollars.

HairBalls
The other problem you may have with your cat is Hairballs!! To greatly minimize the affliction, get yourself a good hair brush, and brush you cat at least weekly. Not every brush is good, the one I use and have seen the hairball issue dissolve. Once I got my own FURminator Large Yellow deShedding Tool with 4-Inch Edge

- I'm lucky, I have a feral cat and when she started to come in the house I just taught her not to scratch on anything except the scratching poll...however once in a while she gets frisky and grabs the couch and starts to scratch, all I have to yell is NO and she is on her way...I think she is exceptionally smart...lensrolled to "my feral cat named Kitty" lens
