Dickinson is often sentimentalized, which I guess is inevitable about a poet who wrote many love poems, wore white dresses and sent cake or flowers with her poems to show she really did love neighbors and friends whom she refused to see when they popped in.
But, no one reads Dickinson poems for very long and remains sentimental.
While I've provided links that focus on various Dickinson poems, this quiz is based on some biographical facts about this challenging poet. Just for fun. Pick between fact and fiction You'll see your success charted as you proceed through all 10 questions.

Reading about the new book, "Go the F**k to Sleep," I've seen more than one review where the author was compelled to include a reference to Emily Dickinson, America's prize poet.

Would You Like To Find Others In Your Area Who Are Interested In Emily Dickinson Poetry?

All it takes is a book of poems and a few people getting together at a local bookstore, library or coffeehouse. There are some Emily Dickinson International Society groups around the USA and they're always free and open to the public. In Western Massachusetts I lead two EDIS poetry discussion groups. Jennifer Shook at the Caffeine Theatre Company in Chicago can help anyone interested in the Emily Dickinson Coffeehouse.
People who teach in colleges and universities enjoy lots of opportunities to "talk Dickinson." Also, the personal-mystical value of the poems is becoming a greater and greater source of interest. Academic people often join with these intuitive readers. Some people are more interested in Emily Dickinson as an historic figure. And, one of my favorite "Dickinsonians" is forever reading, writing and learning more about biographical details of Emily and the Dickinsons of Amherst.
If you would like information or help to get a group started in your community, here are contacts: edis.amherst@gmail.com, or, go this website, EDIS, and look up a member near you. Or, join the Facebook page for the Emily Dickinson International Society.

"At the time of her death in 1866, Emily Dickinson left in manuscript a body of verse far more extensive than anyone imagined,"
~ Thomas Johnson, the first editor to refrain from "normalizing" the poems. And, the first to aim for "The Complete Poems."
Emily Dickinson's grave marker is the third from the left, between her father, Edward, and sister, Lavinia (Vinnie). Mother Emily is on far left.
A friend of mine once made a scrapbook of photos taken of mementos and paraphernalia left behind on the poet's grave or maker. We found it fascinating how people were willing to share their emotions about America's poet.

- I am, but only because I say so, because I got only two right on the quiz! At least I knew where "The Belle of Amherst" was born. I'm a person who loves words, and I've always loved the way she used them.

- I found it interesting to read recently that they think she may have been epileptic and the theory is that some of the phrasing in her poems may have been describing the symptoms of that.

- Yes, Lyndall Gordon's new book reveals the author's belief that Dickinson was epileptic. I don't think so; but, it's better than the old saw about the poet being unlucky in love. Thanks for visiting!! I'm really happy to see you here!
