Who is Emily the Strange?
Emily first appeard on a sticker to promote Cosmis Debris, a clothing line founded by Rob Reger and Matt Reed. Reger's friend Nathan Carrico designed Emily in 1991. Reger then created additional designs and Reed brought Emily into the fashion world by creating t-shrits capturing the young girl and her mysterious world. Since then, Emily the Strange has grown into a popular franchise that has branched out into other areas including jewelry, toys, dolls, footwear, posters, comic books, novels, and other merchandise.

Emily the Strange is slated to come to the big screen in 2010 courtesy of 20th Century Fox . Emily will be brought to life by Fox Animation, using a mix of live-action photography and CG-animation. The storyline is being kept under wraps, however, it has been reported that it will tell the origin of the gothic figure and her four mysterious cats - troublemaker Sabbath, schemer Nee-Chee, imaginative Miles and leader Mystery. 13 new characters will also be introduced in the movie.

The Emily and Rosamond Debate
Rumors began circulating amoung many blogs in December of 2008 that Cosmic Debris stole the character of Emily from the "Nate the Great" character Rosamond. Both Emily and Rosamond have long black hair and cats and are both strange. You can see the similarities in the images above. You can read Rob Reger of Cosmic Debris response here. The author of the "Nate the Great' books, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat, 80, and the illustrator, Marc Simont, 93, have yet to comment. The possibility of a potential lawsuit is still unknown.
