Erica's debate
When you look through your window on a typical June afternoon, you see much activity-birds soaring the sky, flowers blooming, little children running around and playing hide and seek.
Life appears beautiful, innocent, and carefree and there doesn't appear to be a problem anywhere. It was on this type of day when all seemed to be going well.
Erica was invited to have dinner with Pat. She relished the opportunity to visit with her friend, alone, since Robert, her nine-year-old son, was visiting his friend.
Erica was about to leave when the doorbell rang. Upon answering the door, she saw a little boy, no more than six or seven years old, crying.
"Can you help me? I fell from my bike and my hand hurts. It's bleeding and I'm scared," he spoke through his sobs.
"Where's your Mom?" she asked while looking towards the street, hoping to see someone.
"I don't have a Mom anymore," he replied sadly.
Erica debated what to do for a few seconds. She knew it sounded terrible, especially when a child was in pain, but one could never be too careful where a stranger's child was concerned.

Erica's decision
"What's your name?" Erica invited him inside.
"Eric."
"OK, Eric," she said while leading him to the washroom. "Sit on this stool for a minute and I'll take care of your hand."
After she finished cleaning and bandaging his wound, she asked him if he wanted a glass of milk and a cookie.
"Yes, please."
"Then follow me to the kitchen."
Erica called Pat to inform her she would be a little late, saying she would explain why later.
"Eric, why did you come to my house? It could be dangerous to knock on a person's door if you don't know who they are."
"But I know you! You're a teacher at my school."
Surprise!
Erica's reaction
"I'll be in grade three when school starts."
"Who is your teacher?"
"Mrs. Saunders."
"She's nice."
"Yes, she is."
"How's your hand, Eric?"
"A little better. Thanks for the milk and cookie," he said as he rose from the table. He rinsed his glass and brushed the cookie crumbs into the garbage.
"You're welcome. Do you need a ride home? I'm going out anyway."
"No, thanks. I have my bike. Thanks for taking care of my hand," he said before walking through the door.
"Be careful."
After he left the house...
she watched him ride out of sight, knowing in her heart she could easily become attached to this little boy without a mother.

Introducing Pat and Robert
For the most part, they laughed through it, though there were the occasional moments which brought tears to their eyes.
Soon afterwards Erica was on her way to pick Robert up from his friend's house.
"How was your day, Robert?"
"It was awesome," he replied while fastening his seatbelt. "We watched an air show. I didn't realize pilots could perform so many stunts while flying their planes. Mark and his Dad had a great time, too. How was your day, Mom?"
"It was quiet, but I did get a chance to write for a little while before I went to Pat's, and I met a little boy named Eric today. He's going into grade three."
"Where did you meet him?"
"At home. He fell from his bike and rang the door bell. He cried because his hand was bleeding."
"Wow! Sounds like you had an interesting day."
"Yeah. Do you want to go to the park with Pat tomorrow?"
"Mom, all I can think about right now is going to sleep," he replied as he started to yawn.

A little background information
In some ways, Pat was like a second mother to Robert while her husband, Scott, was like the father Robert no longer had.
Erica rejoiced when Pat later told her about all the fun they had. It was important that her closest friends could also be friends with her son.
Sometimes, though, she felt a little jealous. Since her husband's death four years before, she didn't feel she had been the mother that Robert deserved.
Sure, she looked after his needs, and they went places together. However, she was preoccupied with preparing school lessons and teaching her students most of the time.
There was also the lingering feeling of loneliness which she had to combat most every day. She continued to miss her husband, David, terribly. She missed her soul-mate and wasn't sure if she could ever feel whole again, which also made her feel guilty because, after all, she still had Robert to live for.

Erica's promise to Robert
Erica was thankful Robert wasn't like most of the boys his age. Robert enjoyed being wrapped in her arms as they watched movies together.
"Mom, can we go to the beach tomorrow? I had so much fun swimming today," Robert asked as he was settling into bed for the night.
"Of course! We can do whatever we want for the rest of the summer. Let's go to the beach, swim, and have a picnic. On our way home we can go to McDonald's."
"That sounds like fun, Mom. It's going to be so good being able to spend more time with you again, even if it's just for the summer. I hope this summer will be better than last year," he said softly while looking into her eyes.
"What was so bad about last summer?" Erica asked, though she felt certain that she knew the answer.
"Mom, last summer you spent a lot of time crying. You were sad and it was hard to be happy when I was around you. The happiest times, last summer, were when I was with Scott."
"I'm sorry, honey. I promise this year will be different," she said as she tucked him in for the night.
However, as she drifted to sleep, her mind was racing. It was trying to come up with a way not to let her grief continue to overshadow the time spent with her son.
Robert knew she never made promises unless she felt she could keep them. This promise was not going to be an exception. Erica was determined to find a way to hide her grief if she couldn't overcome it.

Great Christian fiction authors
Despite the adversity her characters live through - from being abused or kidnapped, or being friends/family members of murder victims, Terri points readers toward the hope and peace which comes through having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Cape Refuge (Cape Refuge, No. 1)
Wayne and Thelma Owens, two missionaries, are killed in the warehouse used as their place of worship. Blair Owens is their youngest daughter, while Morgan is the oldest.
While Morgan is the calmer daughter who tries her best to please her parents, Blair is not quite as easily led. She struggles with believing in God - wondering if He is real. After hearing about the death of her parents, Blair feels even more alienated from God because she casts the blame at His feet.
The place of refuge the islanders had lived on for so many years has become a place of uncertainty. A murderer is in their midst and, while residents would like to assume it was someone passing through, could it be a murderer lives among them?
Southern Storm (Cape Refuge, No. 2)
A storm breaks out and, as a result, Police Chief Cade hits and kills a man who walked in front of his moving vehicle. Not long afterward, Cade disappears.
Blair Owens knows something is wrong, despite everyone's claim that Cade has gone away to get his head straight.
In addition to Cade disappearing, babies are being kidnaped from hospitals in the area.
Is Cade's disappearance linked to the kidnaping of the babies, or was Cade the victim of trusting a total stranger?
River's Edge (Cape Refuge, No. 3)
Murder and mayhem continue in the third book of Terri Blackstock's Cape Refuge Series.
Ben Jackson is running for mayor and there seems to be no doubt that he will win - that is, until his wife turns up dead along the river's edge.
Blame is cast in his direction as gossip spreads like wildfire throughout the small island. What will happen? Will he be found guilty of murdering his wife in an act of jealous rage or is there a more sinister reason for her death which has nothing to do with her husband?
Breaker's Reef (Cape Refuge Series #4)
This is the finale of the Cape Refuge Series and will leave readers wanting more.
A famous mystery writer arrives in town and two murders occur which resemble the details of murders he has written about.
As Police Chief Cade and Blair Owens struggle to solve the murders, some of the evidence points to Cade as being a suspect. Of course, he works hard to prove his innocence despite all the challenges he faces along the way.
The book is filled with twists and turns which will have you turning pages, unable to prepare meals and not wanting to do work of any kind. In fact, the same can be said of the entire series.
