EQ Versus EI

Why we call emotional intelligence "EQ"

The word emotional intelligence can be a mouthful, so people tend toward using nicknames for it. We use the term "EQ" because it is the easiest. "EI" is not as widely understood when it is heard.

There is a debate about the term "EQ" because "EQ" stands for emotional quotient and a quotient is a number divided by another number. We aren't so concerned about the math.

We prefer the distinction that EQ is something similar but unique from your "IQ", which is your ability to learn. Your ability to learn doesn't change much over the course of your life. Your emotional intelligence, however, can change and can be increased.

Emotional intelligence is linked physically to a specific path of neurons in your brain and these paths can be changed.
  • This means that emotional intelligence is a set of skills, not an innate ability.
  • This means that you can change the neuron paths in your brain.
  • This means that the habits you've developed in your life can change.
  • It means that if you are not yet emotionally intelligent you can become emotionally intelligent.
