My Dad's Art

This lens is my attempt at sharing my Dad's art. And, getting his work exposure. His work deserves it. He has dedicated mind boggling time to his work. He is a folk artist(self taught artist). I don't like the term folk art. Art and what one loves etc. is subjective. So, why does it matter if one is self taught or went to school.

I believe that the term folk art should not exist.

Was Einstein a folk scientist? or a folk physicist?
No, he was a genius.

I could go on, but that's for another lens.

Most of my father's work are large(some extremely large) dioramas. They are all composed of hand carved, hand painted individual pieces. Then, the pieces are placed and arranged in Large wooden shadow boxes. The shadow boxes are also made by hand and painted by my old man.

The Nightwatch(1642) Dad's 5ft wide, 4ft high, 1ft. deep

Nightwatch

This diorama is awesome!

Nightwatch is one of Rembrandt's most famous paintings. It represents a group of civic guard musketeers led by Frans Banning Cocq. These civic guard groups were formed to protect cities in Holland from the Spanish.

The dioramas have been cut, carved and painted by hand!

The people and components of these paintings have been placed in their appropriate positions in the dioramas so that the distance separates each of the subjects as in the painting.

In all of Dad's paintings there are elements only found in his interpretations. In the Nightwatch, the dog on the right was one of his dogs. And, my father often places himself somewhere in the paintings. Often, he's not readily seen and one has to search for him.

Jan Van Eyck(1434) This diorama 3.5ft. wide, 5ft high, 1ft deep

Giovanni Arnolfini and His Wife

This is one of my many favorites of my father's. I think he's fond of it too. He gave me a few of his pieces a few years ago. I asked for this one...nope.
But, he gave me one of his first dioramas. (not on lens...trying to get a good pic of it)

The mirror behind the couple has the mirror image painted in it. The dog up front is my parent's dog, Phoebe.

The Water Seller of Seville (ca. 1619) 4ft wide, 5ft high, 1ft deep diorama

Rembrandt The Conspiracy of Claudius (Julius) Civilis

Dad loves to make em big!

6 ft wide, 4 ft high, 1 ft deep

Note the saw horses supporting this diorama. It gives you an idea of the size of the size of this work.

Rembrandt Man in Armor. Dad's diorama 6ft high, 3.5ft wide, 1ft deep

Two in one photo

Picture of Both

Man in Armor, also called Alexander the Great.

And, The Falconer. This painting possibly represents the medieval Dutch hero, Count Floris V of Holland. He was lured to his death by his former associates on the promise of a hunting expedition.

The School of Athens This one of Dad's is not a diorama. I love it. It's not for sale.

The School of Athens

You can't tell from this photo, but this work is very large. I'll have to find out the exact dimensions. Even though this is not a diorama, I do have to say that it illustrates my old man's ability to use the principles and techniques of perspective. He may be moody, but he's a great artist! But, a lot of artists are "emotionally complex". Dad would like that description...he'd chuckle and say,"no, I'm just a grouchy old man".

Toulouse-Lautrec In A Private Room at the "Rat Mort"

There's Dad?

The man in this one looks very much like my father? hmmm

Paintings on his studio ceiling(the barn).

An attempt to capture barn ceiling...Dad is a huge Michelango fan. I am too.

God created Speedos too?

more painting on barn ceiling

Dad's work "arranged" in studio

The Spinners ...note shadows. The shadows are from the hand cut and painted pieces .

Velazquez

Dad's diorama of The Spinners or The Fable of Arachne

This glorious work is 5ft wide, 4ft high and 1 ft deep.

Arachne was a young woman(shown in the foreground on the right wearing a white blouse) of great skill at weaving tapestries. This ability was so great that it out shown the goddess of weaving, Minerva who is disguised as a an older woman sitting at the spinning wheel(this part of the fable is shown in the foreground).
Minerva challenges Arachne to weave a tapestry glorifying the God of Jupiter. When they are finished, Arachne's great talent is obvious and Minerva is enraged. After tearing Arachne's cloth to pieces Minerva chasts off her disguise and reveals herself in helmet and armour. This part of the fable is seen in the background. Minerva is striking Arachne with a shuttle on the forehead. Then, Minerva transforms Arachne into a spider and she is compelled to spin webs for the rest of her life.

The Moorish Dance by Toulese-Lautrec(1895)

The Moorish Dance

A Toulouse-Lautrec(1895)

The dancer was one of Lautrec's favorite nightlife nightlife models by the name of La Goulue. The onlookers in the foreground are Oscar Wilde in top hat, entertainer Jane Avril and the artist himself in the bowler hat.

The Postman Roulin is 3.5 ft. wide, 4ft high and 6in deep

Joseph Roulin was one of the few people who befriended Van Gogh in Aries. He was a postman. He posed in full uniform with his eyebrows raised as though he was startled or amused.

The Postman Roulin. (1888) Diorama

Van Gogh The Terrace Cafe at Night(1888) 2.5ft wide,3ft high,8in deep

Dad's work "arranged" in studio. You can see Xena painted on rolling shade.

2 dimensional painting of Dad's. Pretty Woman with Red Scarf. A Dad original.

Xena painted on roll up shade! Very big shade. Cool, huh?

My Dad and I thank you so much for visiting!

Please don't forget to rank the lens before you leave or leave us a comment. Thanks again. My Dad is getting a kick out of the attention his art is getting. Like a lot of artists he doesn't think that his art is ever "good enough".

The self portrait of the my old man was done in 1984.

My Dad's art that I'm displaying on the lens was created much more recently than the self portrait.
