Empire Records the movie
Ranked #25,924 in Entertainment, #317,969 overall
"This music is the glue of the world. It's what holds it all together. Without this, life would be meaningless."
Yes, music really is the glue of the world, and so is this film, it seems. I think it goes without saying that Empire Records really is a cult movie, taking in teenagers ten at a time.
My brother was the first to rent this movie, and since then, I've watched it, all my brother's friends have watched it, all my friends have watched it, and we've converted hundreds to Empire fans.

Characters
In alphabetical order
AJAJ is played by Johnny Whitworth (phwoar!) and is an arty kinda guy. He's been working off and on at Empire for five years. He's in love with Corey and has to tell her by 1:37 exactly. He quits his job at Empire Records so he can move to art school in Boston to be near her.
CoreyCorey is the 'closet speed freak' who is in love with Rex Manning. Her best friend is Gina, who is not so innocent. She's going to Harvard. AJ is in love with her. She then realises that she loves him too. Awww.
DebDeb has problems. She comes to work with a bandage on her wrist and she shaves her head. She's sick of being invisible. She friends with Gina but she doesn't like Corey, although she does help her after her outburst. She wants to know what her funeral would be like so the gang at Empire show her. I think this is what puts her off killing herself.
GinaGina is Corey's best friend, and she's worried that she'll end up like her mother whose life ended after high school. She has a dream of singing in a band, which comes true at the end of the movie when she sings with Berko.
JoeJoe is the boss at Empire. He's trying to stop Empire from being turned into a Music Town, but has a set back thanks to Lucas. He somehow manages to keep it all together, despite all that happens. He plays the drums and ends up going out with Rex Manning ex personal assistant. His rules are extremely simple: count money twice, keep your hands off of his beer, cigars and drumsticks.
LucasLucas is, in my opinion, the star of the movie. He steals nine thousand dollars from Empire and goes to Altanlic City. He doesn't win anything. So he spends the day sitting on the couch, and he still manages to catch a shoplifter. Joe beats him up after he calls him a superb manager
MarkMark is the funniest employee at Empire. He doesn't know how to spell his name. He wants to start a band. And he likes music that's moshy. He also has a friend named Eddie who makes his brownies with drugs in them. He's the one who saves Empire and he tells Eddie that Lucas went to Vegas and married a mobster's wife.
Rex ManningRex is a washed up imposter who happens to be signing autographs at Empire on this eventful day. His assistant Jane quits on him after she realises that he's a loser and nobody likes him. He has a bad haircut and carries a purse.
WarrenWarren is the punk kid who comes in the store and shoplifts some CDs. Lucas catches him and he spends most of the day on the couch with Lucas playing on a gameboy. He meets Jane. He's fooled by AJ's glued quarters. He also gets his picture taken with Rex. After he gets arrested he comes back with a gun. He ends up working at Empire.
Quotes from Empire Records
"I know this. That if I win this roll, I'll stop the place where I work from being sold, and the jobs of my friends who work there. Thus striking a blow at all that is evil and making this world a better place to live in...and I'll buy you guys a drink"
"Music Town franchise option agreement? They gotta be kidding. In the immortal words of The Doors, the time to hesitate is through"
"I wonder if I'll be held responsible for this"
"I do not regret the things I have done, but those I did not do"
"Would you please not sing Mark"
"You know what Joe? One of these days I'm gonna show you little people"
"Yeah well on that day I'm gonna jump out of my wheelchair and do a dance"
"Lucas"
"Joe"
"Lucas, where's the money?"
"Joe, the money's gone"
"Yeah I know it's gone, where's it gone to?"
"Atlantic City"
"Atlantic City. Is it coming back from Atlantic City?
"Uh, I don't think so Joe"
"What's it doing in Atlantic City?"
"Recirculating"
"Lucas listen to me, I told Mitchell Beck you forgot to deposit the money. I told Mitchell the money was still here"
"Joe that's not true, it's in Atlantic City. I swear"
"Shut up and sit down"
"It could be in other cities by now..."
"Joe, I think it's going to be OK"
"Oh, yeah, and what makes you think that?"
"Who knows where thoughts come from, they just appear. Mmhmm"
"Me Joe, you Jane"
"Who are you"
"I'm Jane"
"Oh"
"I work for Rex Manning"
"Oh (laughs)"
"No Debra don't be bitter. Surely with your ever growing collection of flesh mutilating silver appendiges, and your brand new neo-nazi boot camp makeover, the boys will come a running"
"Let's not fight, let's just rip"
"Warren, a person like you needs to diminish their criminal impulses, not magnify them. Maybe some jazz, or some classical"
"Maybe you bite me"
"How old are you?"
"Old enough to kick your butt through your skull and splatter your brains on the wall"
"Yeah, he's a juvenile"
"Hey I'm the ones who's in trouble here. Because every minute that goes by and I don't callthe cops, I look like a bigger banana head"
"Joe, I can catagorically say that you are not a bigger banana head"
"Isn't it customary to leave the scene after committing the crime?"
"Definately an ameteuer"
"Well my name, is spelled with... a k."

Cross-Over
Haven't I seen those 2 in something before?
Liv Tyler and Ethan Embry have both been in a film together before, and this is just a little module about them. They both starred in That Thing You Do! (visit my That Thing You Do! lens here)In Empire Records, Liv and Ethan both play shop clerks, one called Mark and the other called Corey. Mark is cute but stupid, and Corey is sweet and innocent.
In That Thing You Do, they play Faye and T.B. Player. Liv is the neglected girlfriend of the lead singer of a band called The Wonders, and Ethan is the bass player for The Wonders.

- Wonderful lens on a great movie! I remember watching this back in the 90s and having some laughs watching Maxwell Caulfield's character because i had seen him on Grease 2 before. (:
