Ranked #206 in Games, #6,961 overall

I came, I saw, I conquered.

Empire: Total War is a turn-based strategy and real-time tactics computer game developed by the Creative Assembly and published by Sega. The fifth instalment in the Total War series, the game was released in North America on 3 March 2009. Following a similar style of play as earlier Total War titles, players choose a contemporary 18th century faction and set out to ensure that faction's domination over the known world through military force, politics, diplomacy, espionage and economics. Although the campaign element of the game is turn-based, players can direct battles in real-time.

Empire: Total War is the first game in the series to allow naval battles to be conducted in real-time. In addition to the standard campaign mode, the game includes a special campaign that follows the development of the United States from the settlement of Jamestown to the American War of Independence. Poll: Which is your favourite land unit?

I played the demo for a couple of times now and I find myself very fond of the grenadiers. To me it's just pure awesome to run straight at the enemy and throw explosives at them. I will admit it's a stupid strategy (if you run straight on vs hundreds of guns) but in a way you can view them as brave men and imo it looks cool.

And people wonder why men love war

I have both Rome and Medieval 2, and I would have to say I am playing Rome more at the moment. This is mainly due to the host of mods for Rome - like "Europa Barbarorum", that add a lot more immersion, historical accuracy and gameplay options to the game. It will be a while before mods of that caliber are released for Medieval 2, but there is one soon to be released called "Broken Crescent" which looks interesting.

Platoon Fire vs. Rank Fire.... which do you find best?

The later infantry units in game all use the Platoon Fire option. It is supposed to be the more advanced as it is acquired through a later tech. It's the one where fire ripples down the length of your units. However i find it not effective as the Rank Fire option...I find the Rank fire more effective. Its the one where the first rank fires and then kneels so the rank behind can fire and then kneel and so one. It seems to me to be the more effective method...

Which firing method do you think is better?

Platoon Fire

sander says:

I do not know where you all come from, but in Belgium these games are also very popular. For the Americans in the chatroom: Its a small country between France and The Netherlands. So a part of the population speaks French, the other part Dutch and some others German. This results in several problems: We do not have a federal government yet though the ellectives ended 500 days ago. We invited fries and our chocolate is famous all over the world. I agree with empirenerd. Platoon Fire is more effective than Rank Fire. The unites ,who are using Platoon Fire, have more accuracy and morale than their enemies who use Rank Fire.
They keep an unstopping roll of fire on their enemies while Rank fire needs a certain reload-time. What would you do when the enemy just wont stop firing and more and more of your brothers in arms are getting killed. their high accuracy makes every shot count. Though Platoon Fire is less impressive, it's more effective than Rank Fire.

Empirenerd says:

It depends. When you play empire, the line infantry unit will use rank fire and later infantry use platoon fire. Since the later infantry units are have more accuracy, morale etc, they will beat line infantry any day. Platoon fire doesnt seem as impressive as rank fire, but in the end, it is an unstopping roll of fire whereas rank fire has to stop (in empire) after the third rank fires for a few seconds then the first rank carries on. In the end, rank fire is more impressive but less effective as line infantry have lesser accuracy (the higher the accuracy in Empire, the more enemy will be hit), and platoon fire is less impressive but since later infantry have more accuracy, is more effective. Accuracy and morale is everything in Empire during a shooting stand off! (This is taken from personal experiences from Empire Total War)

once again Steam creates problems...

jeff says:

rank fire is great for advancing against large formations. platoon firing is handy in defensive situations, on high ground and when moving through a shattered battlefield (units scattered). youll see the shattered battles mostly when fighting maratha, ottomans, natives, and russians.

existentialvoid says:

Platoon fire is just more flexible - but in the game rank is more useful in terms of killing dense ranks of solders.

Rank Fire

Rene says:

I agree. If possible i prefere skirmish units because they fire all at once.

isaac says:

in the movie waterloo(as well as the event)the british guards hide in the grass, and the pop up and start using rank fire.the 1 and only reason tthat the imperial guard ran.therefore, based on this,i vote rank.

Joseph says:

Rank fire is best

Rank fire has always worked for me.

Napoleonic warfare required one of the most complex strategies of all historical time periods. If you think it's nothing but watching your formations shoot volleys out one another, then you are mistaken. Why do you think Napoleon merely relied on his generals? Because they lost all his battles in almost every situation, and yet he was a mastermind who conquered piratically all of Europe.
