I admire these reenactors for putting the effort into showing people history. But sometimes, they have these GREAT expressions on their faces.

boom goes the dynamite! A Big Bang by Trevor Gregg Photography. I was told by the reenactors, this larger Union field piece is a 12-pounder Napoleon.

Poll: Which is your favourite land unit?
I played the demo for a couple of times now and I find myself very fond of the grenadiers. To me it's just pure awesome to run straight at the enemy and throw explosives at them. I will admit it's a stupid strategy (if you run straight on vs hundreds of guns) but in a way you can view them as brave men and imo it looks cool.
And people wonder why men love war
Platoon Fire vs. Rank Fire.... which do you find best?
The later infantry units in game all use the Platoon Fire option. It is supposed to be the more advanced as it is acquired through a later tech. It's the one where fire ripples down the length of your units. However i find it not effective as the Rank Fire option...I find the Rank fire more effective. Its the one where the first rank fires and then kneels so the rank behind can fire and then kneel and so one. It seems to me to be the more effective method...
Which firing method do you think is better?

Ian, your an idiot. Physical combat has been present in all ages of the world, and I imagine it will be present in futuristic combat too. Why? Because, frankly, the enemy can't shoot you if you're grapling on the ground with him.

I'm guessing Ian meant -Foxes- regimental losses, a work pertaining to the American Civil War, and thus outside the scope of this (pre-napoleonic/napoleonic) period. In general, he seems to have confused the two.

Ian, melee attacks were common in many situations: you only have to look at Waterloo or Badajoz to see that, Austerlitz and anything in India too (The highlanders assaulting the various Indian troops with bayonets)
Platoon fire was most effective historically because of its constant nature. Each platoon firing a second after the one next to it, 30-50 men firing at a time for 20 seconds then starting again. It was an unending wall of iron - in theory a full batallion would fire at a rate of 3000 shots per minute or more. In came there seems to be less of an effect of halting the advancing troops, the front rank of enemy die when hit, but they just advance regardless.
I'm going with platoon, since it should be more effective.
Again Ian, since you mention waterloo - almost 60% of the British and Dutch troops which paraded at the start of the day (not counting those Dutch who ran away) were killed in just over 4 and half hours and still saw off the French Elite Guard - that's with not far off double the 33% rate of casualties
Again at Waterloo the Inniskinnings had a huge huge number wounded, similarly look at the 74th at Assaye, around half killed.

Ian says:
Platoon fire is what the British used historically because it proved superior to rank fire. The explanation for this is smoke. During this period all fire produced vast quantities of dense white smoke. How this affected visibility depended on atmospheric conditions. Platoon fire could take advantage of gaps in the smoke. To see how imporatnat smoke could be one can look at one of the British artillery batteries positioned near Lay Hay Sainte at Waterloo. Given perfect visibility they could have fired over 200 rounds per gun at the various French attacks. The average number of rounds fired was 129 which suggests lack of visibility could have been important.
However in my limited experience of this game there are many inaccuracies so I am not sure how much smoke is represented. At this period melee just didn't happen. An attack would falter or a line would break before contact was actually made.
Also troops tended to break by the time 33% casulties had been sustained. The casualties given in Fowes regimental losses are very telling.
In the naval battles wind direction takes no part one would think the ships were power driven. "Holding the compass" seems beyond the designers comprehension.

Rank Fire
Rudolf says:
Platoon fire is more effective when going against another unit shooting at your unit. However, if the enemy is charging at your unit, the Fire-by-rank is better as more muskets are discharged in a shorter amount of time.

Cauchpotato says:
Although platoon fire was historically more effective, gamewise it almost seems the two are better than each other in certain situations. If you want to constant casualties from the maximum musket range, than platoon fire is better. If you want to wait until the enemy they are close and fire at them en-mass, or just cause several casualties at once rather than constant dwindling, than rank fire is better.
A good general should have men capable of both rank fire and platoon fire.
