    LOL@employee performance review terms.
Great lens. I think employee performance reviews should be done, because they show where you stand in the eyes of the Hr and the employer.

Loved your way of putting things together here. Too bad small companies never do that, and hiring managers in large ones are too busy to (at least at places I've worked).

Employees need better resources to help them progress in their careers. So few companies support employees who want to improve themselves. I agree that performance reviews can have a positive effect on employee motivation, but only when they are done right.

The performance review of employee is necessary while managing a company
  • planvictory Nov 22, 2011 @ 2:34 am | delete
I think it all is relative to the job, responsibility and position of the performer.
  • goodeboy09 Nov 8, 2011 @ 9:29 pm | delete
I agree that effective performance reviews can have positive effects on employee motivation and overall contribution to the organization. However, most organizations either do not provide the necessary resources to help employees advance in the career as a result of good performance. Also, due to massive downsizing at many organizations as a result of the most recent recession, managers are most often pulled to projects outside their immediate job function that removes time that managers need to develop the close relationships with their employees that could provide a more accurate performance review. I also do think the biggest issue is that managers are not trained properly on how to do a good performance review. I think taking the time to listen to the employee during the review is a good idea but to get the full effect of this sort of active listening technique should be followed by a summary of what was covered to ensure there are no missed points either at the end of the review session or provided to the employee for review before the final signoff on the review. It is not so much that you present yourself as taking the time to listen but the fact that you can prove that you retained what was said.

I actually really love employee reviews. My position is pretty independent compared to some of my other coworkers, and I like the periodic opportunity to reassure myself that my boss thinks I'm doing as good of a job as I think I am!

I realize this lens is for people who conduct reviews, but I can't help comment because today I had my one-year review. The manager who conducted the review was prepared, he has some first hand knowledge of my work (even though there are several layers of managers between us), and he was clearly comfortable in the entire process. Overall it was a good review.

An excellent lens on the best way for managers to handle performance reviews. As a technical recruiter, I see that there are two points at which a top performer is likely to decide to make a career move -- right after he had a poorly done performance review or right after he was overlooked for a promotion. -- Michele Ann Rooney Technical Recruiter in the Greater Detroit area.

My husband always complains about his bosses and upper management at his company, but then I read articles like this and think, "I wouldn't want to be in a managers role" when it comes to performance reviews...all the employees think they are awesome but yet you have to give them room to improve as well...I will stick to my housewife role :)

I had some bad experience with my performance reviews. Never understood why my ex-boss was nagging me on certain issues. After 5 years, I came to reliaze it.... If only the managers could explain properly what is their expectation and where the employee is lacking...

I am a team who is also doing performance evaluation to my subordinates. The process was doing fine and well. But it is very different if you are the ones who is going to be appraise by your boss. I got my performance review and it was kinda scary. Now I know what the feelings of my subordinates when they are having their performance review.

I also thank you for sharing your insight to us in this performance review because I can use this when I will do a review to my people in the content writers department. As of now they are writing essays.

I got a performance review once. It was average, pretty much, though I had thought I was doing a better-than-average job. It was a blow to my ego, but not a major one; I lived to tell about it. lol

Your take is right here. I was a manager for many years and learned the importance of reviews early, fortunately. It's surprising that so few do them well. Only one of my employers used this tool well, and my last employer used to run through the review at rocket speed, as if afraid I'd speak, even though his comments were rarely critical. I think a lot of managers are personally insecure, which causes them to lack confidence in their own evaluations.

I have a small question. How do you review the progress of the freelancers that you may have in your projects? Any strategy , tools techniques to propose ?
  • heartharmony Mar 26, 2010 @ 2:29 am | delete
Great question. To me the philosophy is the same no matter whether you are an employee, volunteer or freelancer.

    * Have the discussion about what is to be delivered by when.

    * Have clearly defined project briefs and hold people accountable to them.

    * Start with a small challenging test project to see if the person has the skills, experience and attitude that you need for your project (and the communication skills to ask clarifying questions and the willingness to keep you informed of progress and roadblocks).

    * And make 100% clear which are the non-negotiable performance bits - the bits for which the contract will be terminated if they fail to deliver on.

Biggest freelance problems are not delivering on deadlines and failing to read the brief which means they miss key elements or do them incorrectly.

Personally I am very hard on my freelancers - I hold them to the same standards and performance expectations that I demand of myself. Most times it works, and yet I have also had some almighty disasters with freelancers :) which I then turn into learning experiences.

Well, work blunders are but natural, provided they are not done regularly and habitually. I can forgive my employee for forgetting a few things unless it is not deliberate and she is fairly new to the job. Also, do your job as a boss, educate, train, and reward whenever possible. :)

It should be a time for both the employee and management to have an open and honest discussion about their experiences and thoughts. I especially liked your point about how there should be no surprises!
