Empress: Book one of the Godspeaker Trilogy
I recently read book one in the Godspeaker Trilogy by Karen Miller. Empress was released in paperback by Orbit on April 1, 2008.
Fantasy fiction is not a genre that I typically pick up to read but Karen Miller has grabbed my attention with book one in this trilogy of a land called Mijak filled with warlords, holy men, and slaves.
Miller is an Australian author who is proving herself quite well in the Fantasy Fiction world. She is a master at detail in her writing and keeps the suspense flowing to the very end of the book.
Follow me with a bit of the story, information about the author, and find places that you can purchase this incredibly well written book.
Empress: Book One
Empress, book one in the Godspeaker Trilogy tells the story in a land called Mijak with incredible detail and imagination.Hekat, precious and beautiful, comes from extreme poverty in the northern part of Mijak. A she-brat is just an unwanted mouth to feed in her culture. So worthless that her family doesn't even bother to give her a name. She is sold for a few coins to two slave traders who pass through her land.
She names herself as she begins to admire one of the slave traders on their journey back to his city of Et Raklion. One of the traders referred to her as a little hell cat and she takes from that, naming herself Hekat.
One of the traders sees her beauty and plans to educate her, dress her in finery, and get a hefty price for his investment. Hekat is unaware of his plan but knows that she was not put in this life to be a slave or a concubine. She knows she was brought to life to serve the god.
This book is filled with an intriguing storyline of humanity at it's best and worst. Miller weaves the reader through a tale of what can happen when people can be over zealous in the practice of their beliefs and the achieving of their goals. There is quite a lot of violence in the book with the fighting between warlords and the sacrifices made to the god on a regular basis.
My personal rating of the book would be 5 out of 5 stars. I'm not generally a reader of Fantasy Fiction, this rating is strictly from the point of view of how well written it was, how much I enjoyed the book. It held my interest completely and I can't wait to pick up book two and continue with this story.
The image to the right is not from the book. It is just my vision of what Hekat might have looked like once the grime was removed from her body.

Karen Miller - Author
Her second series was the Godspeaker Trilogy. Two of the books of this trilogy, Empress and The Riven Kingdom were honored by the James Tiptree, Jr Award and in the Fantasy Division of the Aurelias Awards.
Her Rogue Agent series is penned under the name of K. E. Miller. The Accidental Sorcerer and Witches Incorporated have been published in this series.
I think Karen Miller is destined to become a favorite of many fans of Fantasy Fiction in the future.
