Old House Restoration and the Vintage Junky 

I've always been in love with vintage clothing, but I've got to admit to being a scrounger in general. I guess I just can't stand the thought of throwing something out that still has life in it.

Last year my husband and I bought an old "fixer/upper" house in Victoria BC, Canada and we've been in the process of slowly restoring it over the last year. What's happened is now my scrounging duties have expanded from just vintage clothing and accessories, to including all manner of vintage architectural products and furnishings. You cannot imagine the delight when you find 50 free used allan blocks in perfect condition:) The goal of course if to restore our crooked house without spending a fortune and keep it as close to original as possible. The side benefit to all this scrounging (other than saving a whole lot of money) is that things that would otherwise be garbage are saved and reused. Here are some things that we've done to date:

* Cabinetry in bathroom reno: Instead of building a linen closet we bought an old art deco sidebord with etched glass doors($75.00), painted it white and waxed it and this is where we now store our towels.

* Fixture in hallway ceiling: There was the ugliest tatty brass and crystal chandelier in the hallway. I removed all the crystals and cleaned them. Rewired and replaced the ceiling plate, spray painted it chrome and replaced the crystals. Now it looks fabulous and cost just a few dollars in materials.

What I'm trying to say is be creative and try to think of solutions outside of the Home Depot catalog. What you'll end up with is something unique that no-one else will have and you'll be proud of yourself as well.
