Emergency Medical Technicians Are Saving Lives!

People's lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics during the most incredibly stressful situations. Emergency pre-hospital care begins before the medical doctors, x-ray technicians and nurses ever get a look at the patient. Not only does an EMT provide EMS care like CPR and cardiac defibrillation, stabilization of injuries and assist patients having trouble breathing-they also offer the gifts of caring, reassurance and more often than not, a shoulder to lean on.

Handling everything from heart attacks to hamster bites, EMT's are incredibly well trained to bring emergency care right to your door.

EMT'S MUST ASSESS THE SITUATION QUICKLY

Time Can Be Vital and Minutes Do Count!

An emergency medical technician (EMT) is a trained professional who responds to emergency medical situations, car accidents, fires, and injuries occurring in homes or workplaces. Many assume that an EMT is a paramedic, but this is not the case. Firefighters and police are not necessarily EMT's, but they may also be trained as one.

When the ambulance or first responder vehicle arrives, EMS providers must make treatment decisions quickly and have to be able to assess signs, symptoms and safety of the enviornment in order to rapidly begin treating sick or injured patients. Time can be vital and minutes do count.

Performing heavy rescue, providing life saving medical care, performing CPR or delivering babies - all EMT's wear their t-shirts, jackets and ID with pride! Whether they are career fire department or volunteer rescue squad emergency medical technicians, they are there for everyone who needs them day and night, through all kinds of hazards and weather and always making a difference.

First aid and rescue squads still have volunteers throughout America and even companies that have career or paid personnel often still need volunteers. EMT's and Firefighters

Firefighter Rehab

Ever wonder why EMT's are also dispatched to Fire Calls? Really great EMS units are vital to structure fire calls, hazmat incidents, building collapse and so many other types of alarms. No, they don't fight the fires or contain the hazardous material - but they are there to protect firefighters who do.

Firefighter Rehab is designed to ensure that the physical and mental well-being of members operating at the scene of an emergency (or a training exercise) don't deteriorate to the point where it affects the safety of any other members. After all, "stressed out" is not a good thing when you're working at one of America's most dangerous jobs.

As East Windsor Fire Company #2's Captain and a very active firefighter I can tell you that we are fortunate to have East Windsor Rescue Squad #1 and #2 that give their all not only their community night and day, but also to their Fire Companies.

Rehab stations providing a "break" away from the action with EMT's ready to check your vitals, offer you a seat, a drink of water and a way to cool off keeping us healthy, fit and ready to go again.

Fire Rehab Stations and EMS

EMT's and rescue squads set up fire rehab stations for firefighters and personnel on the scene of large scale and extended fires and hazardous calls. Identify your rehab station with signs, banners and equipment that make it easy for everyone on scene to find.

EMT's and Paramedics

Some fun behind the scenes EMS facts:
  • EMT's miss alot of meals!
  • People who don't feel well all day usually decide to call 911 in the middle of the night "just in case!"
  • The heavier the patient, the more likey they will go upstairs to call EMS and wait to be carried down.

911: How To Call For Help

Most people will call 911 when they need an EMT in the United States and Canada. Be sure to find out what the emergency number in your immediate area is before you have a medical or fire emergency.

Calling 911 can be very stressful and it's easy to feel overwhelmed. 911 dispatchers are trained to guide callers through the experience, but knowing what to expect can help make the 911 call go smoothly and get emergency help where and when it's needed.
If you choose to call 911, know what to expect and how to react.

Stay calm. It's important to take a deep breath and not get excited. Any situation that requires 911 is, by definition, an emergency. The dispatcher knows that and will try to move things along quickly, but under control. They will activate the EMS system judging whether paramedics also need to be dispatched.

Know the location of the emergency and the number you are calling from. This may be asked and answered a couple of times but don't get frustrated. Even though many 911 centers have enhanced capabilities -- meaning they are able to see your location on the computer screen -- they are still required to confirm the information. If for some reason you are disconnected, at least emergency crews will know where to go and how to call you back.

When the dispatcher asks you questions, answer clearly and as calmly as possible. If you are in danger of assault, the dispatcher will still need you to answer quietly, mostly "yes" and "no" questions.

While the conversation with the 911 dispatchers may seem to be taking forever, there's a good chance that emergency services are already being sent while you are still on the line.

Follow all directions. Listen carefully, follow each step exactly, and ask questions if you don't understand.

Do not hang up the call until directed to do so by the call-taker.

Volunteer and Career EMT's

Incredibly Dedicated EMS Providers

Emergency Medical Technicians are eating dinner one minute and doing CPR the next! They never know when the next call will go off and what to expect when it does. Out of a dead sleep, into their ambulance and hoping for any amount of medical information from the 911 dispatcher. Emergency........

Motor vehicle accidents can become overturned with patients entrapped, unconcious, heavy rescue to remove trauma victims. Or they may be fender benders with everyone involved refusing medical attention.

Difficulty breathing and chest pain can become patients who die. CPR in progress, defibrillation and pouring every ounce of training and experience into saving a mother of three children in the next room. Or it could turn out to be a case of overeating and their next loud burp makes them feel better.

EMS is like that. Every time the pager goes off, the adrenaline hits the ground running and stays prepared, trained and ready to save lives, get patients to hospitals, surgeons, burn centers and crisis centers. So many lives are saved, so many wounds are bandaged, splinted and wrapped. So many EMT's care so much.

Star Of Life History and Meaning

Star of Life - The EMS Symbol

Physicians and nurses have the caduceus, emergency medical service personnel have the Star of Life. Use of the Star of Life by EMS personnel is encouraged by the American Medical Association The Star of Life applies to all emergency medical products and services funded under the DOT/EMS program.

The Star of Life was designed by Leo R. Schwartz, Chief of the EMS Branch of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Star of Life was created after the American Red Cross complained about the common use of an Omaha orange cross on a square background of reflectorized white which they saw as an imitation of the Red Cross symbol. The NHTSA investigated and felt the complaint was justified.

Adopted from the Medical Identification Symbol of the American Medical Association, the newly designed six-barred cross was registered as a certification mark on February 1, 1977 with the Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks in the name of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
THE STAR OF LIFE

Each of the six "points" of the star represents an aspect of the EMS System. They are:

Detection
Reporting
Response
On Scene Care
Care in Transit
Transfer to Definitive Care
The staff on the star represents Medicine and Healing.

Heart Association: Hands Only CPR

Excerpt and links from Channel 3 News

Heart Association: Hands-Only CPR Works On Adults
NEW YORK (AP) You can skip the mouth-to-mouth breathing and just press on the chest to save a life. The American Heart Association is promoting a major change in dealing with sudden cardiac arrest in adults.

It says that hands-only CPR works just as well as standard CPR in those cases.

You should use rapid, deep presses on the victim's chest until help arrives.

Experts hope bystanders will now be more willing to jump in and help if they see someone suddenly collapse. Hands-only CPR is simpler and easier to remember. And it removes a big barrier for people skittish about administering mouth-to-mouth to strangers.

Mouth-to-mouth breathing should still be used on children, since a child who collapses is more likely to have breathing problems.

CPR "Hands Only" New From AHA

YouTube CPR Video

The AHA has announced it's OK use CPR compressions only to try and save an adult in cardiac arrest. No breathing necessary, just give deep rapid compressions and hope for the best. Do you think it will work? Do you think it will encourage "civilians" and bystanders to lend a hand? Here's a video ad and how really easy they want bystanders to understand it can be to help save a life.
