English Composition 1

Colleges have high expectations for the students to whom they grant admission. Many of these schools will require that students complete rigorous courses of study in order to graduate. Some students may even qualify for scholarships for a free college education, based on their writing ability. Colleges would not admit students if they felt students could not reach the high standards after all. Many colleges take the time to assist students in reaching those standards. One of the ways that colleges facilitate student intellectual development is by having all incoming freshmen take the English Composition course.

The first step to any collegiate experience is for prospective students to attend orientation. Many students enjoy orientation because there are many different activities for these students to partake in and it is the first taste of independence for many students. One part of orientation that is all business is the writing assessment. Prospective students are herded into a lecture hall within the college and given a topic to write about. Once completed, colleges will assess a student's proficiency in writing and they will assign students to either remedial writing (a non-credit course), English Composition or provide an exemption for any composition courses.
