Dravidian Architecture

Dravidian architecture is a style of architecture that became known thousands of years ago in South India particularly in Tamil Nadu. Comparing to other parts of India the Dravidian architectural history starts only with the beginning of the seventh century A.D., the memorials built before that period having corroded. . From 1000BCE-300CE, the peak undertakings of the kingdoms of the early Chola, Chera and the Pandyas included brick temples to deities Amman, Murugan, Shiva and Vishnu. Several of these have been unearthed near Adichanallur, Kaveripoompattinam, Poompuhar and Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. The structural plans of these holy stuctures were shared to some detail in several poems of Sangam literature. In early Tamil literature mentioned such structures as koyil, maddam, nagaram, palli etc., which are actually references to temples or sacred edifices. Most probably they were built of temporary materials which have given way to the devastations of time.
