Endemic Birds on Islands and in other Threatened Habitats in the World - Urgent cases for Nature conservation
Endemic birds are bird species or subspecies of birds that have a rather restricted distribution. Some of the most famous endemic birds are living on small isolated islands like the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean and The Seychelles Island in The Indian Ocean.
But also bigger islands like Madagascar have a large number of endemic species in general: the famous mammalls the lemours, and many very interesting endemic birds.

- Thanks Jane, I have just returned from Iguazu with plenty of birds to watch - some of them very local. So I will make use of some of my observations and bird pictures here.

Endemic bird species are highly sought after by bird watchers worldwide
As birders are watching birds all over to world to capture a glimse of seldom birds the bird watchers have been very important to identify areas that need special attention for nature conservation. As birds are highly attractive creatures and well established in all natural habitats the occurance of a high and stable level of bird diversity is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.
When the bird diversity is going down it will in all cases have to do with the destruction of habitats and of natural resources in general. Some species will dissapear fast others will be species at risk for some time before they dissapear for ever. When such species are endemic to the island or other area, these species will become extinct.
We find typically the highest number or highest ratio of endemic species of birds on islolated islands, and isolated mountains and forests, or very special isolated natural habitats in general.
