Energy Broker: What do they do, How much do they make & How do I become one?

Welcome to my informative guide about being an energy broker. Being a fairly new job, many people have questions like "What is an energy broker? An energy broker in the sense that I speak is actually an energy consultant (also referred to as an electricity broker or consultant) who helps homeowners and businesses switch to a cheaper gas or electric supplier. See below to learn more about my personal experience working as an energy consultant.

What is an Energy Broker?

Energy BrokerEnergy brokers are independent representatives of energy supply companies and serve as the party that mediates the sale of energy between the buyer and seller. The energy broker earns a commission as well as a residual income for each customer they consult & acquire as a customer for their chosen supplier. In short, a broker acts as an independent contractor marketing the business to potential customers. Brokers don't change customer's electric companies, they change their electric supplier. (The supplier is where the electricity is actually generated.)

This is made possible due to energy deregulation in several states. Energy deregulation has created an open market for electricity supply and allows companies to purchase energy at wholesale rates and resell it at a lower price than electric companies who are locked in to long term contracts. The reason energy consulting appealed to me was because I am not actually selling customers a product or service but rather consulting them on how much they can save by switching their electricity supplier. It's satisfying growing a business that helps me earn money and also save my customers money all at the same time.

Some of the pros I've discovered working as an energy broker include:

  • A flexible work schedule.

  • Potential for great income.

  • A monthly residual income.

  • Helping people save money.

  • Learning Sales, Networking & Marketing.

  • No actual selling.

How much do Energy Brokers earn?

Energy BrokerThere is no clear-cut answer to how much an energy broker can actually earn. The simple answer is as much as you want. Because energy consulting is commission based, income is based on your willingness to work hard. The company I work as an independent representative for offers about $7-20 commission for each customer acquired and a residual each month I maintain them as a customer. The business model is that of a network marketing company, so the bigger my organization grows the more income I receive.

The Network Marketing Energy Business

My Personal Experience

I have been an Independent Representative for an energy company for almost two years now and have enjoyed the experience thus far. I personally do it for the residual income that comes along with the business. I enjoy the idea of continuously reaping rewards month after month for work that I performed a year earlier. I work full-time and dedicate part-time time to my organization basically whenever I feel like it. That model works for me. I have also spoken to my up-line sponsor who makes a full-time living out of the business and network marketing, having built a great organization of personally recruited reps and customers. Whatever the route you want to take with the business I recommend one thing -- do it.

Everybody you know uses electricity. Your friends, neighbors, coworkers. It doesn't cost you a dime to get started, so why not try signing up as a referring customer (for free) and sign up a few of your friends. If you like what you're doing, you can continue. If you don't think it's a good fit for you, just stop. You'll still have earned the commission from your customers and continue earning residual payments on them every month that they are a customer.
