Many home electronic appliances (TV, stereo, computers, ...) continue to consume small amounts of energy even when in an off state.

Home Energy Saving Tip 3 - Managing the effects of the sun...

Save energy by taking advantange or avoid the heat from the sun

This one is quite simple...

During the winter months, open your curtains on windows facing south to naturally let the sun heat your home.

In the evening, close them to retain the maximum heat within your home. This also reduces the cold chill that can appear near windows.

Make sure your curtains are not blocking air vents or radiators.

The opposite should take place during summer by closing curtains, shades or outdoor blinds to avoid overheating your home during the day.

Home Energy Saving Tip 4 - Stop singing in the shower ...

Saving energy by enjoying the warmth but consuming less hot water

Hot water consumption represents a considerable part of energy used in a normal home, therefore one of the many important ways to conserve energy.

I do not know precisely how much hot water (or cold) is used in my home in a typical month.

What is sure, it is quite a lot!!!

Take showers instead of baths, you'll save time as well.

Lower the thermostat of your hot water heater to 120 F.

Install aerating, low-flow faucets and shower heads within your home.

Ensure your hot water heater is sufficiently insulated using an special water heater blanket.

Repair promptly any faucets/taps that drip or leak.

These five energy saving tips will lead to more efficient hot water production, a reduced consumption and save you some money. In the meantime, you can continue being comfortable while singing in the shower.

Home Energy Saving Tip 5 - Get out of your comfort zone ...

Save energy by regulating your heating and cooling - use an automated thermostat

Typically 46% of your utilty bill goes for heating and cooling your home, which also emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Wear warmer clothes (sweaters, etc) inside during the winter months.

Adjust your thermostat to a temperature you are still comfortable with.

Lower the thermostat by a few degrees when no one is present at home or at night.

Install a digital programmable thermostat that will allow you to regulate the temperature in your home more efficiently (at night, when away).

Turn on those ceiling fans as well, check the rotation to be sure it forces the heat to stay down.

If you are not using it (spare room), close it and decide not to heat it.

These five home energy saving tips will go a long way in consuming less energy and keeping more money in your pocket.

I encourage you to look carefully at installing a digital programmable thermostat.

Home Energy Saving Tip 6 - Can you see the light ...?

Rethink your artificial lighting - efficient technologies for saving energy at home

If you can't see the light, you are already off to a good start.

Turn off lights when you leave the room or when daylight lighting is sufficient.

Use compact fluorescent (Energy Star rated) bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs, when they burn out. They use about 25% of normal bulbs and last 10 times longer.

Once you have completed this for indoor lighting, apply this to your outdoor lighting.

Will these three home energy saving tips really help you to consume less energy?

It is said that if every American home replaced just a single light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, that would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year. That represents about $600 million annually in energy costs and it prevents greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.

So, take the first step and install at least one energy saving light bulbs (if not more). You can start the next time you have to replace one.

This is by far one of the best (most simple) ways to conserve electricity in your home.
