Energy Star Fans Save Our Earth

Although the United States has only 5% of the World's population, it is stated that we consume more than 25% of the Earth's Energy Resources. It is important to find ways that we can conserve energy and still maintain some of the comforts that we are accustomed to. A great way to do this is by using Energy Star Ceiling Fans throughout the home.

Energy Star fans save the earth by reducing the energy that is used to operate the fan as well as allowing the air conditioner to be used less which results in an even greater energy savings. Through the reduction of energy consumption on various levels, the use of Energy Star rated ceiling fans throughout the home can help save the Earth one fan at a time.

There are numerous requirements that a fan must go through in order to gain the approval of the Energy Star. Most importantly, an Energy Star fan must use less energy than a standard model. Although the EPA and the US Department of Energy do not require an Energy Star fan to meet specific style requirements, many of these fans have been designed with style in mind.

Earning the Energy Star

In order for a ceiling fan to earn the Energy Star it must meet very stringent energy efficiency requirements which are set by both the Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy. The requirements are based on Airflow efficiency as measured by CFM/Watt, Convenient adjustment of Airspeed, Minimum warranty and packaging requirements.

  • Airflow of a ceiling fan is measured in cubic feet per minute or CFMs. Airflow efficiency of a ceiling fan is measured as the ratio of airflow divided by a specific power and is stated in terms of Cubic feet per Minute per watt of power consumed by the motor and controls or CFMs/Watt.

  • To earn the Energy Star logo, ceiling fans operated on low speed must move at least 1,250 cubic feet per minute or 155 CFM/Watt. Operating an energy star rated ceiling fan on Medium speed will have a minimum airflow of 3,000 CFM and an airflow efficiency of 100 CFM/Watt. At high speed the same model fan should operate with an airflow of at least 5,000 CFM and an efficiency rating of 75 CFM/Watt.

  • The motor, fans blades, and control system are treated as a system and a combination of savings from all aspects of the system may be used to maintain a given efficiency level. What this means is that a fan can have a highly efficient motor with less efficient blades and still be considered Energy Star qualified as long as it meets the above minimum airflow and efficiency requirements overall.

  • Another requirement to be considered for the Energy Star logo is that a ceiling fan must allow for the convenient adjustment of air speed. What this means is that the consumer should be able to easily change the speed of the ceiling fan through the use of either a wall mounted switch, an easily accessible pull chain, or a remote control.

  • In the event that a pull chain is used to change ceiling fan speed, the pull chain must meet additional requirements. The chain must be long enough so that it reaches a height of not more than 80 inches above the ground when the fan is mounted according to manufacturers intended installation instructions.

  • In addition to changing the speed of the ceiling fan, the consumer should be able to change the direction of the fan. Every Energy Star fan will have one of the following mechanisms to allow for convenient adjustment of airflow direction in either an upward or downward motion:

    • Wall mounted switch

    • Remote control

    • Pull chain (meeting the same requirements as above)

    • A switch mounted on the motor housing of the ceiling fan

      • When the said switch is mounted in a vertical direction the downward position will correspond to a downward airflow

      • For horizontally mounted switches the airflow direction shall be clearly marked

  • All Energy Star fans must meet minimum warranty requirements as set by the EPA. Qualifying products will offer a minimum warranty of 30 years on motors and at least on e year for all other parts and components.

  • In addition to warranty requirements, all Energy Star qualified ceiling fans will be packaged according to specific guidelines. The packaging will contain the Energy Star Logo, as well as airflow, fan power consumption, and air flow efficiency at each of the three speeds low, medium, and high.

Energy Star Fans Use Less Energy

The average Energy Star ceiling fan uses about 50% less energy than a conventional ceiling fan. What this means to the consumer is that by installing Energy Star ceiling fans throughout the home the average consumer can realize approximately $20 a year in savings on utility bills. This savings is due to the energy that is saved by using an Energy Star fan.

Energy star fans save energy thanks to their improved motors and blade styles. The blades are pitched for optimal energy efficiency and the motor is built more efficiently as well. This energy efficient technology is what allows the average Energy Star rated fan to move air up to 20% more efficiently than a conventional ceiling fan model.

Conserve Energy, Save the Planet

earthSaving energy reduces the need for more power plants which saves a tremendous amount of natural resources such as water, land, and wood as well as other fossil fuels. These fossil fuels are non-renewable resources meaning that they cannot be replaced once they are all used up. Unfortunately fossil fuels take millions of years to form and are being depleted far more rapidly than new ones are being formed. The depletion of fossil fuels and the Earth's natural resources such as water and land have many trying to do what they can to save the planet before it is too late.

Since saving energy reduces the use of valuable fossil fuels that are irreplaceable, it only makes sense to find ways to use less energy while still enjoying the comforts that we all are used to. Using an Energy Star qualified ceiling fan helps to prevent pollution by cooling you off while saving up to fifty percent of the energy that would typically be used by both a standard ceiling fan and air conditioner combined.

By conserving energy, valuable fossil fuels are not being depleted as rapidly which in return is reducing the amount of pollution that is released into the atmosphere. This combination of effects can have a great impact on the planet. Using energy efficient ceiling fans are a great way to save the planet.

Energy Star Fans Have Style
