What are Energy Drinks?

Most energy drinks contain a combination of energy and vitamins. These drinks were first promoted to and endorsed by two generally disparate groups - athletes and computer geeks.

Caffeine is widely thought to enhance athletic performance, and the stereotypical computer geek toils late into the night. Red Bull, the first drink popularized in the US, quickly replaced the old standby of Mountain Dew among the computer elite. The use of energy drinks quickly spread, especially in the 16-29 age group.

Energy drinks are now considered an alternative to coffee, and it seems everyone from professional athletes to everyday people on the go are enjoying the drinks.

As they try to cram more and more into their days people are more tired but and energy-depleted. Energy drinks, found a very receptive market because they offer instant energy along with vitamins and occasionally herbal supplements.

"Energy drink ingredients are one of the ways people distinguish between the energy drinks they like"

Energy Drink Reviews

Red Bull

Red Bull is available in regular and a sugar-free formulation. Other than adding a sugar-free version it hasn't changed since its inception. The primary ingredients in Red Bull are carbonated water, sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, taurine, glucuronolactone, caffeine, inositol, niacin, vitamin B12. The grand-daddy of energy drinks, Red Bull contains 80 mg of caffeine per can as compared to 145 mg in 8 oz of brewed coffee. It's no surprise that Red Bull is frequently combined with other ingredients, it's taste leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Monster

Monster energy drinks are typically available in both an 8 oz can as well as a 16 oz can. In addition the original and low-carb formulations are available in a 23.5 oz XXL can. There are 6 formulations of Monster, most with flavor variations.

The original Monster energy drink contains many of the same ingredients: Carbonated water, sucrose, glucose, citric acid, taurine, natural flavors, sodium citrate, l-carnitine, panax ginseng root extract, ascorbic acid, caffeine, sodium chloride, niacinamide, riboflavin, guarana seed extract, inositol, glucuronalactone, pyridoxine hydrochloride, cyanobalmin.

Many people choose Monster over Red Bull because it tastes better and due to the larger size it satisfies the thirst. Both drinks pack the same 10 mg of caffeine per oz so the larger cans of Monster may pack a stronger punch.

FRS Healthy Energy Drink

FRS is a unique energy drink because it was developed with more than just increasing energy in mind. FRS is geared toward promoting better overall health, and for this reason the majority of the ingredients in this drink have documented positive health benefits. FRS comes in 5 flavors, including 3 low-calorie forumulations.

The main active ingredients are in FRS are quercetin and green tea extracts, both of which are effective anti-oxidants. Quercetin is an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-histamine. FRS contains more flavoniod anti-oxidants than 3 servings of blueberries or 10 servings of raspberries. The anti-oxidants in green tea extract have been shown to be more effective than vitamin C. FRS also includes B-complex vitamins and the vitamins C and E. FRS contains 48 mg of caffeine per 11.5 oz ready-to-drink.

While FRS provides an almost instant burst of energy this burst is not followed by the energy crash so common with other energy drinks. FRS is used by athletes such as Lance Armstrong as well as many Ironman triathletes for long-term energy. It is equally useful for those who just need a boost during the course of the day. It's modest caffeine level won't leave you feeling jittery, yet you'll be ready to tackle the day.
