UK green energy targets...
at risk
The UK is at risk of missing its green energy targets due to its conflicting government polices.
The BBC1 announced that it had learned that the Scottish Executive2 has plans on blocking the Lewis Wind Farm on the Isle of Lewis, located on the Western Isle of Scotland. This potential block has come after a barrage of 5000 letters from Lewis locals was sent to the Scottish Executive complaining about the development.
The grounds for the complaints were based around the social-economical impact and the environmental impact of the wind farm. It was argued that the wind farm would be an eyesore and would put tourists off visiting the area, hence an effect on the economy. Secondly, the affect that the turbines will have on the environment; Isle of Lewis is home to one of the largest population of birds in the UK. Protesters are unsure on how a development such as wind towers would affect the bird's habitat.
Both arguments are valid however neither has been supported with data showing the affect or wind turbines in the area. One this is for sure, if government does not come up with a solution to create renewable energy sources throughout the country will miss its green house energy targets.
