The English Seaside - Something for Everyone

When I was a child in the 1950s, we went to English seaside towns for our summer holidays.

In those days only the very wealthy went out of the UK for holidays (vacations). After the schools closed for the summer at the end of June, families prepared for their annual migration to the coast in either July or August.

Just like today, there was a great diversity in the places catering for holidays. There was the hectic fun of Blackpool or the more sedate charms of Brighton or Bournemouth (see picture, left). Both towns have livened up a lot over the intervening years and have an almost endless range of entertainment on offer. Then there were the very quiet seaside towns whose main attraction was the peace and quiet with uncrowded beaches and charming country walks. Some of these still exist today.

Below you'll find a selection of English seaside towns showing the diversity available along the coast of England.

Southwold - the Epitome of a Quiet Seaside Town

Situated on England's east coast in the county of Suffolk, Southwold is well known for being a quiet and peaceful seaside resort. In spite of that or maybe because of that, it is a popular place for people to visit.

It has a pier and a beach which is some shingle, some sand. Unlike Bournemouth or Brighton, it has no clubs for dancing and drinking into the early hours of the morning so it's ideal for a quiet, relaxing holiday.

Bournemouth - Popular with Families and Young People

The seaside town of Bournemouth is popular with families, senior citizens and young people. In fact, it has a vibrant nightlife with clubs, bars and cafés, mostly aimed at the under 30s.

It also has theatres attracting big name acts like Michael Ball and Neil Sedaka as well as touring musicals like Chicago and Joseph and His Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat.

The town's beaches are sandy and popular with families. No dogs are allowed between April and September except on Hengistbury Head beach to the east of the town.

Bournemouth Gardens, picture on the right, are in the centre of the town and lead to the main beach and pier. As you can see, on a warm, sunny day they are immensely popular. There is a bandstand where musicians often play to entertain the crowds. People sit on the grass and public seating having picnics, eating ice cream and generally relaxing. There are supervised amusements for children too. The Gardens are a very pleasant place to spend an hour or so.

Southend - A Place for Fun

Southend's seafront from the Pier

Southend-on-Sea was the traditional place for Londoners, particularly Eastenders, to go to visit the seaside. It's always been full of 'kiss me quick' hats, fish and chips, seafront bingo parlours and candyfloss. It's definitely a place for fun.

It is famous for its long pier which has a small railway along its length to take people to the end if they don't want to walk. There are theatres and music venues in the town as well as amusement arcades right along the seafront.

When we lived in London we would go to Southend for the day, taking about £20 (British Pounds) in change between the two of us. We would walk along the seafront going in and out of the amusement arcades and play the machines. When our £20 ran out, that was it - we stopped. We only ever did this once or twice a year and we always felt we had had an inexpensive, fun day out doing something we would never normally do.

Picturesque Tintagel

Tingagel, a small seaside town in Cornwall in the far south-west of England, is famous for its connection with King Arthur. There are ruins outside the town which legend says was the birthplace of King Arthur.

I haven't visited Tintagel for about 20 years. One thing I've never forgotten was all the references to King Arthur tagged on to the town's businesses. The most memorable was Excali-Bar which brought forth snorts of derision from me.

In spite of this it's a picturesque place with many old buildings and antiquities. One of these pictured above right is The Old Post Office, now owned by the National Trust. The building dates from the 14th century and only became a Post Office in the 19th century.

The world's greatest fantasy classic is the magical epic of King Arthur and his shining Camelot, of Merlyn and Guinevere, of beasts who talk and men who fly, of wizardry and war. It is the book of all things lost and wonderful and sad. It is the fantasy masterpiece by which all others are judged.

Staying in an English Seaside Town

A Holiday Caravan Site

The choices of where to stay during a seaside holiday haven't changed much since I was a child. Almost all seaside resorts have hotels, bed and breakfast places, self-catering holiday apartments, caravan sites (see picture above) and campsites. Holiday camps are also an option in some seaside towns.

Hotels and B&Bs vary as much here as they do in other places but you can judge their quality by their AA ratings, the higher the rating, the better the establishment. Self-catering apartments are usually fairly basic but adequate for a stay of a week or two. They come with kitchen cookers, refrigerators and other basic equipment. They usually have pans, crockery and cutlery too. You should also check whether they supply bed linen or you have to supply your own. This all applies if you rent a caravan too.

Campsites may take either touring caravans (those people tow on their cars), motor homes or tents. Some take all three while others just take tents or caravans and motorhomes.

Caravan and campsites sometimes have a communal centre with entertainment or a bar and restaurant. Sometimes they have a store selling various basic things that holidaymakers in tents and caravans might need like bread, milk, newspapers, canned food, etc.

Holiday camps, like the one pictured below, provide a 'chalet', usually just one room, for each family or perhaps two rooms for larger families or those with older children. There is usually a lot of entertainment provided like stage shows in the evening, entertainers to amuse children during the day, a swimming pool, games rooms and other activities suitable for all ages. They are usually a very economic way for a family to have a holiday especially as three meals a day are often included in the price.
