Classic English Comedy TV Shows

Do You Like Your Comedy A Bit Rude?

I don't know about you but I find most comedy on TV these days rather boring. I grew up watching lots of English comedy on Australian TV and it is still my favourite type of comedy to watch.

I always found British comedy to be funnier than the American comedy shows that were on during the same period of my life. The British were a little more risqué with their topics I think than the Americans which is probably what appealed to me the most.

Back When Comedy Was Funny

These television shows listed below are ones that I grew up watching as a child and in my teenage years. All of them hold fond memories for me and are ones that I still like to view from time to time these days. There were less rules and restrictions put on the making of these programs and even society in general back in the 1960's and 70's.

This is definitely obvious when you watch these older shows today. They were not politically correct, had lots of sexually aimed jokes and racial slurs. But somehow all of that was perfectly acceptable back then. Maybe we take ourselves too seriously these days?

Allo Allo

This series was set in German occupied France during the Second World War and focused on a restaurant owner and his friends who were helping the English and the French Resistance. Loads of laughs revolving around cultural and language differences and of course utilising that great dirty English humour!

Are You Being Served

Ah yes, this was a very funny show with lots of dirty jokes that went right over my head as a child. Well most of them did anyway! I fondly remember watching this one with my parents regularly.

Fawlty Towers

It is such a shame that there were not more than 12 episodes of this series made as it was so funny. It is even a favourite of my ten year old son who discovered it recently. Inspired by the bad behaviour of a hotel owner while John Cleese was staying in the seaside town of Torquay with the Monty Python team, he and his then wife Connie Booth started observing his antics and came up with the idea for this iconic TV show.

The Goodies

If there is one word that sums up The Goodies the best, it most definitely has to be 'Silly'! Tim, Bill and Graham serve up lots of laughs in this comedy sketch show about all sorts of things. I loved it as a child, but now, it does not appeal to me so much. I guess that is what happens when we grow up unfortunately!

Do You Like This Type Of Comedy TV Show?

Yes, I loved watching all these shows. The Brits are hilarious!

aquarian_insight says:

Being British, it stands to reason that I love British comedy. Though I can't say I'm thrilled about Mr Bean.

Danzuc says:

I love classic British comedy which has something that through the progression of time will never be the same again. Fawlty Towers is my favorite.

No, I have never even heard of most of these TV shows.

Hale and Pace

Gareth Hale and Norman Pace are a comedy duo who specialised in short skits. Their show ran for ten seasons from the late 80's and was fairly controversial as it featured near nudity and jokes such as microwaving a cat. I would definitely not recommend watching them if you are easily offended, but for those of us who like a god laugh Hale and Pace are awesome! They are still touring and doing stand up stage routines as I write this in late 2011.

Mind Your Language

This show was hilarious with lots of great jokes revolving around word play and cultural differences. Very politically incorrect these days, but if watched with an open mind and a sense of humour, it is really funny.

Mr. Bean

I think that most people who are reading this would be familiar with Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean. Despite the original TV series only having 14 episodes, it was enormously successful throughout the world, spawning two feature films as well as a cartoon series. Mr. Bean was a child like man who with his simple ways and rather unique look on life was able to get himself into all sorts of strife. With minimal verbal content in the show, it was very clever to make this show funny mainly using visual effects. Mr. Bean is one of the funniest TV shows I have ever seen.

Some Mothers Do Ave Em

Ah, you just have to love Frank Spencer played by Michael Crawford in this hilarious TV show. Frank is a guy who is always trying to do the right thing, but is so clumsy that he is always getting into trouble. There were three series made of this show about accident-prone Frank Spencer and his tolerant wife Betty between 1973 and 1978. This was one of my favourites as a child.

The Young Ones

This show all about 4 struggling students, Rick, Neil, Vivian and Mike was one of my favourite TV shows when I was in my early teens. I remember first seeing the show on VHS at my grandparents' house as my Aunt was still living at home at the time and loved it. With lots of meaningless violence, dirty jokes and great music in every episode, it was the perfect show for me at that age. I now own all the episodes on DVD.

Growing up in the US without cable, I only watched BBC shows on Sunday night for about an hour. Benny Hill and I remember a comedian with a partially missing finger that I particularly liked.

Well, without a doubt, The Young Ones. But aside from those, Only Fools and Horses and Auf Wiedersehen Pet.
