It used to be such a big world, yet now i seems every time you turn around, the world has shrunk a little further. The advent of the train, car, airplane and other modes of transportation did their share. Then the introduction of radio and TV opened up our homes and our businesses. Now, with the Internet, the Earth feels smaller than ever.

Because of this, the need for interpreters and translators is greater than ever, with many needed in languages barely studied before. The demand for those who understand Arabic, both written and verbal, is through the roof. Google has announced it is just about a year short of introducing a translation program for all the languages in its system.

Know More Than One Language? Excellent!

So a student with knowledge of Chinese, Spanish, French or some other language is starting to have an edge over one who doesn't. After all, as the world has shrunk, the opportunity to do international business has proportionately grown.

At the same time, there are those who wonder which of these schools really will teach them something. Further, the prospective student may have never taken a course online his or her entire working life, so they could be somewhat cautious. Because of this, many language schools have come up with their own solution also by allowing free college credits earned to transfer back to students' schools.

English Is Core

Quite frankly, there are a lot of exceptional language schools and online colleges that offer an English composition course, too. Many of them have set up small online tutorial programs on just about every living language (and some dead ones) in the world. It must be working. Go to Google and type the words "free classes; language" and you will wind up with over 200 million different listings, all proffering their educational services, translation dictionaries and thesauruses or other similar services. You'll be joining a growing number of students who are starting with a free online college class.

Obviously, after taking this free course a student will not be able to apply for a job at the United Nations or help translate the Dead Sea Scrolls. The idea is to give a potential student an opportunity to get familiar with both the language and the school's educational process. If you like it, they want you to enroll for the full course.

Luckily, technology has advanced to the point where taking an English college class is a lot more enjoyable experience. A student doesn't have to go back and forth from work or one's home. They are able to take classes when it's convenient to the student, not the other way around. Thanks to high speed modems and Wi-Fi, they can also interact with fellow students and teachers for practice.

The constantly shrinking world is causing an interesting shift inside the business world. It is causing an increased demand for interpreters and translators, many who will require a degree to work in their fields.
