English Pointer

The English Pointer is definitely a gun dog breed. Pointers are calm and congenial dogs that are happiest living indoors as part of a family. Pointers are very loyal and affectionate. Pointers are not territorial, but their bark will intimidate most people that come to your door. Pointers are exceptional with children.

While Pointers were bred to be hunting dogs, they are perfectly content with normal family life. Regular exercise is important for Pointers. Pointers are habitual "couch potatoes" who enjoy relaxing on the family's chairs or sofas which is why it is important to establish some good habits with training.

Housebreaking Your English Pointer

There are two keys to housebreaking:

1. Confinement to prevent your dog from going to the bathroom in the wrong places.
2. Constant access to the correct place to go to the bathroom.

Confinement means that until your dog is housebroken, he is never allowed to walk freely around the house. Because if he is loose, he can go to the bathroom on your floor and the bad habit has started.

Access to the right place means that you take your dog outside or he lets himself outside through a doggy door.
