English Premier League Soccer

Ranked #11,888 in Sports & Recreation, #287,534 overall

Welcome to English Premier League

The English Premier League is described as the biggest, fastest, most exciting soccer league in the world. This is my tribute to the 'beautiful game' as it is played in the 'cradle of soccer'.

A Brief History of the English Premier League

From 1992 to Today

The Premier League was formed in 1992 following the decision by the clubs in the Football League First Division to breakaway from that league administration, in existence since 1888, in order to receive a greater share of the increasingly lucrative television rights deal. The Premiership, as it is often referred to, has since become the most watched league in the world.

This season, 2008-9, combined revenues of the 20 clubs is expected to be around £2 billion. The English Premier League is ranked first first in the UEFA rankings of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five-years, ahead of Spain's La Liga and Italy's Serie A.

The season consists of each club playing 38 games - each club plays the twice, once at 'home' and once 'away' and the league champion is decided by the team that collects the most points - three for a win and one for a draw - over the season.

Although a total of 42 different teams have competed in the Premiership, only four have actually managed to win it - Manchester United, Blackburn, Arsenal and Chelsea. Surprisingly the club that holds the most English League titles, Liverpool, has never won the Premier League!

Here are the teams that topped the Premier League year by year since its inception in 1992.

    2004 - Arsenal

    2003 - Manchester United

    1997 - Manchester United

    1996 - Manchester United

    1995 - Blackburn Rovers

    1994 - Manchester United

    1993 - Manchester United

As you can see Manchester United have dominated winning 10 titles. Arsenal were for a long time their closest rivals winning the trophy three times, but recently Chelsea, owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, have come into the reckoning.

2008-09 Top Premier League Goalscorer

Who will be sharp-shooter this season?

Last year Cristiano had an incredible season scoring an amazing 31 premier League goals - what makes his achievement so special is that the Portuguese is not a striker! He is actually played as a right-sided winger and as such it marks the first time in Premier League history that the Golden Boot has not been claimed by a striker!

Who do you think will hit the back of the net the most in English soccer this season? Obviously Ronaldo will be a favorite, as will Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor and Liverpool's Fernando Torres. Chelsea's Didier Drogba, the 06-07 winner, must be a long shot due to recurring injury and persistant rumours that he wants to leave.

How about a newcomer? Wigan's Amir Zaki comes with a big reputation and is already banging them in! Or perhaps you have your eye on some else.
