English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is a gun dog breed traditionally used for flushing and retrieving game. The typical Springer is friendly, eager to please, quick to learn and willing to obey making it an ideal breed to train well. The Springer Spaniel is an affectionate and relaxed family dog with alertness and attentiveness that make it the ideal hunting dog.

Training an English Springer Spaniel

The function of a hunting Springer Spaniel is to seek, find, flush out and retrieve game. Field Springers love to do everything. They are superb gun dogs that perform well hunting small game and hunting waterfowl. Their method of hunting is to "spring", or flush the game and skillfully retrieve it. However, having a "natural" instinct does not mean this all comes "naturally" though. If you buy a Field Springer, or any field dog for that matter both you and the dog will need training. You'll both need to work with a trainer or join a club or organization that offers training classes. You can contact your local kennel club for information about what is available in your area.

Does field-bred or show-bred make the best kind of pet? Either type can be a great pet and loving companion. The same qualities that make Springers good in competition are the qualities needed to be a good pet. Springers are eager to please, quick to learn, and willing to obey which makes training pretty fun.
