English Springer Spaniels

Back in 2006, when we got our first English Springer puppy, Nikki, housebreaking a dog was a new road which I had never ventured down.

All puppies will have accidents in the home until they are properly trained. I did alot of research to determine what would be the best manner to approach this.

You train the dog so that they associate the front door with going potty outside. In a very short time, Nikki understood that she was not to potty in the house, but to go to the door.

When we got her brother, Kiehin, a year later in 2007, it was a simple task to potty train him using the WizDog Indoor Potty

The English springer spaniel is a medium-sized dog with a compact body and docked tail. Its fur is moderately long and should be brushed on a regular basis. The coats of English springers are commonly mostly black or liver with white markings, mostly white with black or liver markings, blue or liver roan, or black and white or liver and white with tan markings. Its ears are the characteristic long, pendulous type of spaniels. Its body is designed for power, endurance and agility with strong legs. Height at the shoulder should be 19 or 20 inches and the dog should weigh 40 or 50 pounds. English springers are enthusiastic, affectionate and make good house dogs as long as they are exercised outside daily.

English springer spaniels are high-energy dogs that should be exercised daily. Their coat should also be groomed at least weekly to prevent tangles and natting of their fur. It is a good idea to look into pet health insurance because, like humans, English springer spaniels do sometimes have health issues and vet bills can become expensive. Be sure to watch for common health issues such as ear and eye infections and elbow dysplasia.

If you are considering getting an English springer spaniel for the first time, be sure to look for a reputable breeder. A caring breeder will help you find a spaniel with a good personality for your household. Ask about their breeding practices. A good breeder should breed only mature dogs with a stable temperament, take their puppies and dogs to the vet for regular checkups and will never sell their dogs to pet shops or wholesalers.
