Reader Feedback is Important!
This site is written for students who are at the very beginning stages of learning English and want - or need to - learn English independantly. The vast majority of the sites included on this page just focus on basic vocabulary. There are so many sites on the web that help students develop their vocabulary. However, for young adults and adults learning English, it is more difficult to learn basic vocabulary that is presented in more of an adult manner. That is the focus of this site; to find FREE online resources that help young adult and adult learners increase their basic vocabulary.
The audience for this lens is adults who arrive to North America with little or no English. As well, this site can be used for high school students, college students, or adults who understand virtually no English. The other audience for this site is people who are learning English in countries where English is not the predominate language. There are many sites, specifically the ones that note "vocabulary," that use the North American pronunciation.
This is only the first installment of this site. Because I want to create a site that teachers can use, I really am looking for your feedback. What areas would you like to see expanded? Are there some types of vocabulary that your students need that you've had difficulty finding? The site will evolve and be expanded as needed. Also, some of the links will be replaced with more adult illustrations as I find them online. So, please feel free to leave some feedback at the bottom of this page. Thanks!

There really is a daunting amount of information currently on the web. When researching links for this site, I also stumbled on more resources that aren't listed above. The following a just a few examples.
- Activities for ESL Students
- This link asks students to connect the words with pictures. It's a great link for beginning English learners.
- Many Things
- This link will forward you to a page that asks users to link the nouns to the picture. Many Things really has a lot of wonderful resources IF the computer has all of the needed flash software downloaded.
- Teflgames
- This link has many matching games, such as opposites and synonyms. There are also games that focus on phrasal verbs, general knowledge, and mystery matches if interested. The games use words and can be used for older students.
- Sheppard Software
- The first few times I stumbled across this link, I didn't include it in any of my resources because I felt that the colors and some of the pictures my high school and adult students would find a bit childish. However, after taking a closer look, I changed my mind. This link REALLY includes a WIDE variety of information that not only could help these students improve their English skills, but the link also helps them develop their academic language as well. The resource is DEFINITELY worth looking into and is currently one of my favorites!
