English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and American Bulldogs
The Bulldog is a courageous, intelligent, sweet, stubborn, incredibly strong dog that is filled with athletic enthusiasm. Despite his ferocious appearance, this breed has a docile temperament, although the Bulldog is a very powerful dog.
Whether you opt for the tradiitional English bulldog, a French bulldog, or an American bulldog, you'll find him to be extremely personable and loving. However, because of the English bulldog's strength and enthusiasm, he would not be the best choice for the elderly or the disabled. French bulldogs, on the other hand, are a considerably smaller breed than English bulldogs.
Though normally not aggressive, he may resist training because he has a stubborn streak left over from his bull-fighting days. The Bulldog needs training, as early as possible, particularly in learning not to pull on the leash, not to jump up on people, and in general to contain his exuberance. He is a fast-learner and loves taking part in games. He loves children and gets along well with strangers; just make sure he does not get overenthusiastic and knock your friends or your children with his bowling-ball body. Training should start from puppy hood and should be firm and persistent. You must gain adequate control of this eager, powerful, stubborn breed early in life.
The Bulldog is susceptible to respiratory problems. These problems are common to English bulldogs, French bulldogs and American bulldogs alike. Your bulldog will snort and sneeze, spewing out undesirable secretions, usually while licking your face. The Bulldog also snores.
In addition, the deep wrinkles on his face and forehead tend to get infected if not cleaned and powdered with cornstarch once a day. Some Bulldogs may need eyelid surgery if a condition known as entropion sets in, causing the eyelids to turn in so that the eyelashes rub against the cornea. This breed is also sensitive to extremes in temperature and can easily become overheated.
Finally, because of his heavy frame, the Bulldog can develop structural problems and a dog arthritis problem later in life. Do not take this dog jogging or let him get overweight.
The Old English Bulldog
Despite its angry looking face, these dogs are extremely amiable and mellow. The Bulldog is well behaved around children and tends to thrive on pleasing its owners. Although he can be protective of its owner and a little aggressive towards strange dogs, this breed makes a great family companion and will get along just fine with other pets in the home.
Upkeep And Maintenance of Your English Bull dog
When it comes to upkeep and maintenance of the Bulldog, moderate exercise should be given on a daily basis, such as a brisk walk through the park at least once or twice daily. This is definitely not the type of dog that is made for running. The Bulldog is quite docile and tends to prefer a slower pace.
Although the Bulldog can live both indoors and outdoors, it is recommended that he remain inside with the family as much as possible. These dogs cannot stand hot weather and are not good with water. In fact, Bulldogs do not know how to swim.
Grooming the Bulldog takes a little extra care, but only around the face wrinkles and other folds located around the tail. These areas should be cleaned moderately on a daily basis. Other than that, a light brushing over the rest of the coat, once or twice weekly, is all that is needed.
Health Information
There are some major Bulldog health concerns that you need to be aware of when owning a Bulldog. They include stenotic nares, shoulder luxation, ventricular septal defects, CHD, internalized tail, and elongated soft palate. Occasionally you might come across urethral prolapse and vaginal hyperplasia.
The lifespan of the Bulldog can reach up to 12 years, sometimes longer. Specific health tests that are recommended by veterinarians include testing for elbow problems, hip dysplasia, knee dysplasia, and potential eye problems. Also, wheezing, snoring, and lots of drool is typical with every Bulldog.
