General Comments
For example, the Thailand public school system now REQUIRES some kind of teaching certificate (yes, believe it or not, even if you have a PhD in English, you still need a piece of junk TEFL certificate), whereas before the only requirement was that you weren't a daily heroin junkie or blatant child molester.
(Hint: a good growth business to be in over the next few years is issuing teaching certificates).
Even many schools in China are now asking for a teaching certificate, even though many will still hire you without one because of the desperate teacher shortage.

ESL English Teaching Jobs, Employment - LATIN, SOUTH AMERICA
But the pay, and cost of living, will be very low. In many cases, even lower than China, since China has had the fastest growing economy in the last 30 years, and their currency has strengthened against most currencies, especially the dollar.
But life is nice and laid back in South/Central America, the people generally like gringos, and the drugs and women are cheap. Was I supposed to say that?

ESL English Teaching Jobs, Employment - EUROPE
There is much more competition for jobs, and your competition will be better qualified. That means most teachers applying for jobs in Europe actually have teaching qualifications, degrees, certificates, experience, etc. Even advanced degrees! Wow, can you imagine! These are real teachers!
Fetching RSS feed... please stand byESL English Teaching Jobs, Employment - ASIA
Remember though that the salaries will be quite low compared to the US or Europe. About $800+ US dollars a month is decent, with many schools offering less.
Again, if you are black, colored, African American, whatever, expect to be turned down immediately when it becomes evident that you are not white. This is not 100% true, and there are a few blacks working in Asia, but they are persistent, can handle blatant discrimination without killing someone, and are often pretty well qualified.
In Asia, it also helps a lot if you are young and female, especially blonde. No, young, white, attractive females with blonde hair are not necessarily better teachers than old drunken men, but in Asia image is everything.
If you are black you chances of getting a job in most Asian countries are much less than if you have soft feminine curves and a come hither but don't touch smile, or if you're a young, white all-American type dude. That's the reality. Many Asian countries are very prejudiced against "foreigners", even of the white-bread variety.
Most teachers don't last more than a year or two in Asia because of the language and cultural differences. And believe me, there are large cultural differences, more than you can imagine. Then again, about half of all ESL teachers don't make it past 5 years anyway.

Salaries will be higher, but so is the cost of living. It actually balances out fairly well. And since George Bush got his kicked to the curb, you don't have to put up with as many snotty, arrogant conservatives as just a few years ago.
Many formerly supercilious Americans have felt the pinch of the financial crisis and had their ego taken down a notch or two. With Asia nipping at their heels, you can see the whites of their eyes.

ESL English Teaching Jobs, Employment - KOREA
Private South Korean Hagwons are often very discriminatory and very corrupt. Many of the horror stories you read about on the Internet are true, and I'm going to tell you a couple of my own.
In South Korea, the general mentality is that when you are an employee of someone you are their slave. You will do what you are told when you are told, and you will not be expected to talk back or give your opinion or criticize your superior in any way whatsoever.
Many will speak to you in a belittling, abusive, snotty, arrogant, rude, crude, condescending manner, which is quite normal. So if you're a submissive type who likes being treated like a dog you will love it here. Ask many people who work and live in South Korea, and they will tell you that they are some of the rudest, abusive and most discriminatory people they have ever met.
Of course, I don't discriminate against races. Some of the best people I have ever met have been Korean. But the Korean culture is highly discriminatory against foreigners, and anyone who argues against this position is living in dream land.
Here are some quotes from TEA-KOR, or Teachers of English abroad in Korea.
" the Korean government restricts the rights of foreign workers to organize-teachers who act often get harassed and threatened with arrest and deportation. Meanwhile the current government of South Korea is planning to further privatize and deregulate education, especially English language education. This means that the working conditions of foreign teachers and Koreans alike will probably worsen."
"The government of the Republic of Korea is carrying out a crackdown against migrant workers, having recently announced it is targeting 9,000 migrants for deportation and 3,000 arrests per month in 2008. It and the media use atypical situations to stir up anti-migrant sentiment and rationalize the criminalization of migrant workers. Indeed, discrimination against foreigners is a fact of life in South Korea, a reason why employers tend to believe that Korean laws do not apply to foreigners."
"...This will give cause for private business to reduce the teachers' pay and step up their exploitation. At the same time, the in-migration of foreign teachers will increase."
"South Korea is a modern country that arose out of feudal life, occupation and war and was industrialized by the landed classes, US interests and global capital. While the democratic struggle boasts great accomplishments, it is still dominated by big landowning clans and a merchant class and infested with patronage and corruption in public and private enterprises. . . Workers are highly exploited."
"Most contracts between private academies and foreign employees are illegal although they are facilitated by agencies including ones based outside Korea in Canada and other countries. Working conditions in the private industry of English language learning are largely unfair. Too many employed teachers and their employers are having bad experiences, even in the pubic system. Too many contracts with foreign teachers are not fair and consistent with labor standards. Too many contracts are cut short. Too many teachers are going through crises and giving up."
"Exactly how are foreign teachers abused?
The attached "Letter to agencies" details all the common problems in private academy-foreign teacher contracts. They are in sum as follows.
*Loosely defined teaching hours causing overwork, under-reporting of hours and loss of overtime pay as required by law (the standard is 30 teaching hours a week)
*No breaks in eight-hour stretches as required by law
*Illegal deductions such as "housing" or "contract deposits" as declared in law
*Illegal dismissal and loss of salary, airfare costs, severance pay, and bonuses, violating contracts and labour law
*Lack of or inadequate notice of termination
*Poor housing conditions violating contracts and human rights
*Failure to supply and pay for adequate household furnishings as stipulated by contracts
*Failure to book and pay for vacation time and national holidays as required by law
*Failure to allow any time for sick leave
*Failure to pay sick leave as required by law"
"Aside from these points in law and contracts, employers find other ways to abuse teachers. They may, for example, withhold degrees and passports, which is illegal. Yet, you may enter an immigration office any day of the week and see employers handling these kinds of documents and immigration officers receiving them unhesitatingly, without the presence of the documents' owner. Some employers hang on to such documents for months at a time as insurance against the employee leaving abruptly when they should obviously be addressing the reasons why employees want to leave badly."
Contracts are not taken seriously by your employer or the Korean authorities. If your employer breaks your contract and decides not to pay you, oh well, you are usually out of luck. Just cut your losses and move on. Fighting the system here rarely is worth the effort.
Racial discrimination runs high in South Korea, and blacks and older people above the age of about 35 are generally frowned upon.
Also, South Koreans work an average workweek of about 55 hours, and they will expect you to have the same work ethic, despite what your contract says.
You have warned about teaching ESL in Korea.
The one good thing about working an ESL job in South Korea is the pay, which is about the highest in Asia and about double what you will earn in China. But you will also work more than twice as hard, and put up with 5 times as much abuse. For me, the loss of integrity wasn't worth the extra pay.
A couple of warnings. There are two schools in Jecheon, South Korea that are franchise schools and go by the name Eastern English Institute or Academy, I don't remember which. One is owned by a woman who goes by the English name Lucy or Lucia. At first she will act so sweet and nice like you are a part of the family. Her husband will also.
She stole my money and broke my contract illegally. She is a snake. You have been warned.
Another greaseball is a guy named Mr. Kim who owns the Michigan Language Academy in Suwon. He is also a thief who lied, cheated, illegally broke my contract and stole my money.
Lastly, there is a company that last I heard went by the name AAK, formerly AA Korea. They hired a manager with the English name Steve Park. He broke my contract illegally and kicked me out onto the street the same day, without so much as a single day's warning. A total prick. They will literally throw you out into the gutter.
Again, want to work in South Korea? Stay away from the private Hagwons (schools) unless you know someone and really know what you are doing. Chances are you will regret it. The public school system is much safer, and you get more holiday time off. But you will still work long hours, mainly with people who resent you for being foreign and making more money than they do. Korea is the sweatshop of Asia.
You have been warned.
PS. Please don't write me and tell me what a great experience you had in Korea. I don't care. And I don't care if you think I'm prejudiced against Koreans, because even my good Korean friends admit their culture is often abusive to foreigners. Decide for yourself.

My advice? Stay the hell out of the Middle East if you are Jewish, unless you're going to Israel. Oh, and if you happen to be female, remember you are a second-class citizen.
However, salaries are generally very high.

Give it a try, but it takes hard work, and don't expect to begin making money right away. It takes a long time to build up a customer base, and the competition is becoming fierce because of the low barriers to entry.
Anyone can put up a pretty looking website or advertisement, right?
