Valentines can go back to a simpler time.

In this day of texting, I-pads and reality television, doesn't a part of you want to go back to a simpler time, when life was straightforward, quiet and wholesome? People having the time to talk, write little notes or cards, or visit with neighbours for family parties was the norm at Valentines.

Sweethearts and beaus picnicking in the countryside, or taking romantic a horse-drawn sleigh or buggy rides. Maybe a moonlight skate on a frozen pond, or today, an outdoor rink in a small town.

All the images in this Valentines Day ideas article are from antique and vintage Valentine's Day cards that can be personalized and purchased on Zazzle.

Depending on your climate in February, a catered or home made champagne picnic could be fun with antique or vintage linens and antique wicker picnic basket. Sitting on a plaid car blanket on the edge of a riverbank or under a tree with the birds singing can be the perfect place for a romantic Valentine's day picnic.

Maybe staying at a Victorian bed and breakfast in the countryside or at a rustic old B&B on a farm would be a treat. Staying at a farm that arranged or provided romantic horse drawn sleigh rides for two would be heavenly. Watching the snowy landscape glide by as you snuggle together under the blankets wrapped up warm would be memorable, fun and romantic.

Real Antique Shawls

Vintage clothing for a treat!

Wool paisley shawls are wonderful for keeping you warm. The ladies either folded the smaller square ones diagonally for a smaller compact covering. The large rectangular antique paisleys were worn with one end draped over each shoulder covering the back but sitting above the bustle on their long crinoline dresses and skirts.

The lighter tassled and beautifully embroidered cream or white silk shawls are wonderful for dinner. They look beautiful over a simple black dress and are surprisingly warm.

You could even look for cloaks or warm capes on Ebay. Go ahead though any of these items to start another Ebay search.

A Romatic Old Time Valentines for Couples

In the Town

For those who prefer the town, maybe a stay in an antique themed hotel in an historic town.

If you both love antiques and shopping then even a little of that would be allowed and I think would certainly part of immersing yourselves in another era together. Maybe an antique Valentine's day gift for your love if they see something they love would be a wonderful reminder of the day.

What could be more romantic than a horse drawn carriage ride through the town. There is a reason why people have them for their wedding day. Feeling wonderful and invigorated with cold air rushing over you while you snuggle tight with your Valentine is not something you do every day!

Maybe skating on an outdoor rink under the fairy lights, arm in arm, would bring back the old days, then a nice candle lit dinner out in a restaurant.

Or maybe room service and a romantic evening in front of a crackling log fire in your room. Soak in an enormous clawfoot tub for two with sweet natural beeswax or real bayberry candles lighting the room, for total luxury and romance.

Think of what you and your partner would love. Is there an era you prefer? What would make this an amazing Valentine's Day to look back on and remember? Or maybe turn into a new tradition. Or how can she or he say "no" to a marriage proposal during a weekend like this!

Bayberry & Beeswax candlkes.

All natural candles the same as they would have had 100 years ago

The candles with the sweetest scents that were the most luxurious, aromatic and romantic a hundred years ago would have been the real bayberry and natural beeswax candles. These are perfect for a romantic dinner, or soak in the tub!

Even if you can't afford to go away, you can afford a few hours with these lovely candles to set the mood for Valentines day romance!

Many greetings cards posted in the mail did not have envelopes and were just postcards. Passionate love messages were secret and often the flowers on the card had a specific romantic, platonic or friendly meanings. The old handwritten script messages are often brief and formal while the design on the others side of the card reveals much more.
