Fall Has Come to Colorado

Yesterday the tree outside my window in Denver, Colorado was so full of beautiful fall leaves. So I decided to take some photos.

What made it urgent was that there was a front coming into the mountains and the weathermen were predicting heavy winds. So I have included here some of the shots I took. This year our fall lasted what seemed like FOREVER! Usually we experience snow in Denver in either September or October. Well it is late October and no snow yet, yippee! The older I get the less I like snow - ba humbug. (By the way this front did result in about 14 inches of snow in the high country - not in Denver).

If you enjoy this lens, you might also enjoy my lens Summit County Colorado. Actually the photos on that lens are spectacular.

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns. ~George Eliot

The fall season has come. Happy Autumn Equinox!

September by Helen Hunt Jackson

The goldenrod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.
The gentian's bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun;
In dusky pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun.
The sedges flaunt their harvest
In every meadow-nook;
And asters by the brookside
Make asters in the brook.
From dewy lanes at morning
The grapes' sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies.
By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather,
And autumn's best of cheer.

For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad. ~Edwin Way Teale

Under a full harvest moon, a Chinese American family unpacks their car, sets out a drop cloth and lanterns, and enjoys fruit, moon cakes, and tea at a "nighttime picnic." They honor the mid-autumn moon with moments of quiet thanks and private wishes as they celebrate the traditional Chinese holiday with other families. In an appended note, author Lin describes the thanksgiving tradition, citing moon stories and explaining the symbolism of round-shaped cups, fruit, and lanterns. For younger children, the slender narrative provides just enough of an introduction; for school-age children, the author's note provides a cultural context. Objects mentioned in the narrative are easily identified in the vivid gouache illustrations. Luminous faces reflect the brightness of the full moon, casting light in the dark night. A beautiful, welcome choice for multicultural studies, this also adds diversity to autumnal thanksgiving themes. Preschool-Grade 3.

Bittersweet October. The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter.

Wear Earthy Fall Colors

Leaves by Lloyd Schwartz

Every October it becomes important, no, necessary
to see the leaves turning, to be surrounded
by leaves turning; it's not just the symbolism,
to confront in the death of the year your death,
one blazing farewell appearance, though the irony
isn't lost on you that nature is most seductive
when it's about to die, flaunting the dazzle of its
incipient exit, an ending that at least so far
the effects of human progress (pollution, acid rain)
have not yet frightened you enough to make you believe
is real; that is, you know this ending is a deception
because of course nature is always renewing itself-
the trees don't die, they just pretend,
go out in style, and return in style: a new style.

Fall Romance at the Movies

Fall [VHS]

Eric Schaeffer's follow up to "If Lucy Fell" (1996) has a maturity to it entirely different than "Lucy." While Lucy was more of a juicy romantic comedy, Fall, which is not lacking in the laugh department, is a far more serious character study/analysis of an improbable romance and the effect it has on each of the parties involved in it.

Schaeffer always seems to be playing himself in his films (or at least always the same character) which is fine by me. I always enjoy his work and his welcome combination of superego, no-nonsense directness and comic brilliance.

As supermodel Sarah, Ms. deCadenet gives a strong performance, slowly yielding, then coming 'round the bend and surprising herself by truly falling for Schaeffer's character, the charming cab driver, Michael. But true to her word, she ends up breaking not only Michael's heart, but her own as well.

As always with an adulterous affair, things are bound to get messy and they do. The acceptance of the affairs ultimate resolution by both characters is handled better than most romantic movies - a genre, I admittedly have little tolerance for. Unless its an Eric Schaeffer "romance" of course!

A quite remarkable little movie.
