Solitude in Everyday Life

Solitude is a state of being self. One may misunderstand solitude as a state of loneliness or isolation due to some external reasons.

Solitude is not a boring state, a state of negative mentality, a state of pain which is forced on a person. Solitude is like voluntary retirement, a state of relaxation, a motivation to enjoy life, by looking at the positive side of life calmly.

We need to find this solitude in everyday life, for ourself, our family, our friends and society. Benefits of solitude can not be described in words just like happiness. Finding A little Solitude in Everyday Life can improve energy level and self confidence along with a strong positive attitude towards life.

What is Solitude?

Solitude as described in Wikipedia

Wiki says solitude is a lack of contact, which can be due to any reason which a person may or may not like. The wiki article on Solitude seems to be related to a forced state of separation discussed under solitude.

In this article on What is Solitude at Wiki effects of solitude or isolation on health, followed by types of solitude and there uses are discussed.

Solitude is a state of seclusion or isolation; i.e., lack of contact with people. It may stem from bad relationships, deliberate choice, contagious disease, disfiguring features, repulsive personal habits, mental illness, or circumstances of employment or situation (see castaway).

Short-term solitude is often valued as a time when one may work, think or rest without being disturbed. It may be desired for the sake of privacy.

A distinction can be made between physical and mental seclusion. People may seek physical seclusion to remove distractions and make it easier to concentrate, reflect, or meditate. However, this is not necessarily an end in and of itself. Once a certain capacity to resist distractions is achieved, people become less sensitive to distractions and more capable of maintaining mindfulness and staying inwardly absorbed and concentrated. Such people, unless on a mission of helping others, don't seek any interaction with the external physical world. Their mindfulness is their world, at least ostensibly.

How to Enjoy Solitude?

Tips to Discover and Enjoy Solitude Everyday.

Benefits of solitude are actually discovered by accidents, when we get enough free time to experiment. Enjoying solitude everyday for a few moments is not only a good way to relax but also helpful an easy way to charge battery of life, with inspiration, motivation and positive thoughts.

It is not possible to find and enjoy solitude when we are tensed or we have few minutes in our hand, or we have especially set aside some time from our busy schedule. Getting closer to feelings called Solitude is only possible when we are free, relaxed, have no commitment at the moment, nobody there to disturb.

I myself find solitude when I've finished my work and am sitting alone at the rooftop, watching the stars or in a room listening to music. In few moments after my thoughts have moved haphazardly on things that make sense for me, on problems and there solutions, I start feeling good, I see a positive light, positive aspect of life. A life which is good, a life which is happier, a life which is meant to live.

There is no special way to enjoy solitude, its a feeling that comes to us when we are alone, we are free and relaxed. There is no single way to find and enjoy solitude, each can discover his/her own way to find and enjoy solitude in everyday life. A little time to think about our own self.

So, here are some basic things to consider in order to enjoy solitude:-

1. We must be alone. This is the only and most important condition to find solitude.

2. We must have enough free time to spend with our self.

3. We must be relaxed and free from any tension.

4. We can do anything that gives us happiness or peace of mind.

5. Listening to music can also help us in reaching that state of mind called solitude.

6. Some people enjoy solitude in gardening, traveling, walking, jogging etc. so it depends on personality or nature of a person.

7. Don't get over involved in solitude, as it can have negative effect if one is overpowered by negative feelings, which can effect social life.

I think the above pointers will help you to find peace of mind and enjoying inner silence called solitude.

Solitude Vs Isolation

What is the difference between solitude and isolation?

Solitude in its true sense is not isolation, its a temporarily created mental state of isolating all problems, worries and clutters of everyday life. Its like enjoying some moments of happiness. So, in other words solitude isn't isolation but its a connection, connection with true happiness, connection with your self, without worrying about the current circumstances and how they are effecting your life.

Isolation on other hand is being thrown out of something or somewhere. Isolation describes a prison, a mentality of a prisoner overtakes a person when he is isolated, he is surrounded by negative thoughts and negative mentality like hate.

Solitude isn't an attraction for negative thoughts, if it is so then please don't call it solitude, you are misunderstanding onliness as solitude, which gives a feeling of departure. A person who is lonely feels departed from what he/she is striving to be with.

Solitude is a positive energy, it creates more energy in a person then any other exercise, food or drink can create. This energy is lasting, it stays for quiet long time, it helps a person to lead a happy and peaceful life without getting perpetuated by obstacles that otherwise look over-sized.

So, solitude is quiet different from isolation, one can enjoy solitude in isolation but solitude is not isolation.

in reply to tomstone You are right when we are feeling good and enjoying solitude, we are not concerned with terms like being alone or isolation. We think of these terms when we long for some company.

When I think of solitude, being alone or isolation are not my fitst thoughts. For me it is just standing still, taking the time to really look at my surroundings and nature and appreciate the beauty, simplicity and complexity of it all at the same time.
