How to Clean Your House Happily, Create a Sanctuary and Enjoy Those Chores!
I have been living in (and looking after) my house for over a year now. I (rather foolishly!) thought that being based from home work-wise would mean I would had plenty of time to do the housework, far more so than when I was employed. Hah! No such luck. I have to implement a strict routine in order to get tasks done, which is supposed to provide me with two hours a day for housework, giving me the weekends free. But of course, life always gets in the way, and I end up playing catch-up, cursing these chores and wishing I had a magic wand on more than one occasion!
Then, I learned about kitchen witchery, which teaches about honouring these everyday tasks and finding the sacred in the mundane. Kitchen witches view housework as a way of connecting with the cycles of nature and honouring the goddess, completing their tasks with joy by putting magic and ritual into them.
Now, you don't have to be a kitchen witch or pagan to learn from this. I have since thought a lot about the principles of housework and how they relate to the sacredness and sanctuary of the home. By researching various topics, from green living to Feng Shui, Native American smudging to spiritual shrines, I have come to realise that housework can indeed be an enjoyable experience, filled with meaning and ritual.
Out of this has grown this lens. I hope you enjoy it!

How to Overcome the Negatives About Chores

It also doesn't help if you're not keen on getting dirty, or if you have a busy schedule! Whether you work full-time, are self-employed from home or are a full-time mum, it can be difficult to fit housework around, well, life!
Here are a few pointers on integrating housework into daily life more easily.
- I don't have time!
Work out how what housework needs doing and how often, how much time per week you need to complete it, and draw up a weekly planner.
Bigger houses will of course take longer than smaller ones, but everything is achievable if you break it up into sections. If possible, allocate one or two hours per day to completing chores in different rooms, not forgetting to allow time for things that need doing daily too.
If this is not possible, for example if you work long hours, try and split the work between an evening or two during the week and a slot at the weekend.

Managing your tasks at set times throughout the week will help you keep on top of things. This means less hard work as there will be less dirt build-up!
Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help. Delegate some tasks to the kids or your partner. Even if it's only the washing up or taking the bins out, it is one less thing to do!
- But it's so boring!
Rather than seeing daily chores as, well, chores, see them as sacred acts that are making your home a sanctuary.
What?? I hear you cry. Have you gone bonkers?
Seriously though, changing your perceptions about housework will make you enjoy it more. It might not work all the time, but mostly it should make life a little easier!
Instead of viewing mopping, sweeping and dusting as mundane tasks that have to be done, view them as things you want to do. See them as ways of keeping your home fresh and clean, and therefore acts that are honouring your home.
Our homes are an extension of ourselves; they are our physical temples, our havens, sanctuaries, retreats from the world. We decorate them and fill them with meaningful objects. Our homes are sacred and special to us. So in keeping them tidy and clean, we are caring for and nurturing these sacred spaces.
We are also creating more positive energy in our homes, and symbolically sweeping out the old and unwanted every time we clean. Think about what you want to be rid of whenever you clean, and visualize it being swept out with the dust!

Liven up your routines by turning them into fun activities! From the cheering to the downright silly, why not try some of these motivational ideas:
* Play happy music to sing along to while working
* Turn your housework into an exercise routine! Dance while you sweep, or do lunges while you vac! You'll kill two birds with one stone by getting your fitness and cleaning regimes done in one go, leaving more 'me time' for you! And if nothing else, you'll probably laugh yourself silly. Laughter is the best medicine, after all!
* Create some magical or inspiring tools to help you clean! Tie pretty ribbons or charms to your broom, put colourful stickers on your vacuum cleaner, or turn your duster into a fairy wand.
You'll feel much more cheerful using these to clean with!
Or why not treat yourself to a pair of glamorous washing up gloves, or a fancy, luxurious Ostrich feather duster?

* Dress up! You don't have to go the full French maid here (although hubby might like it!!) - but you could create a special cleaning apron that makes you feel special, especially if you make (or customize) it yourself.
* Role Play! Imagine you are Dust Buster, or Super Wash Woman! Or imagine you are in a fairytale, acting Fairy Godmother to Cinderella! This can be especially fun if you have children who can play along with you
* Run a reward scheme! It works for the kids, right? So every time you successfully complete a session of housework, treat yourself! You're allowed more than a gold star, of course. How about a piece of chocolate, a pampering foot massage, or simply some valuable 'me' time to enjoy a bubble bath, read a good book for half an hour, or indulge in your favourite hobby?

Only if you let it be!
There are plenty of shortcuts to getting jobs done around the house, and still achieving perfect results.
You don't need chemicals to achieve them, either! There are many natural products out there which cut through dirt and grime with ease, and even cloths that clean effortlessly with just the aid of water!
Plus, if you keep on top of all your tasks, it will be less hard work for you. If you're house is currently a bit neglected, gather everyone together for a BIG spring clean, and then make sure everything is cleaned on a regular basis. That way, you'll be eliminating the dirt and dust before it has a chance to take hold and make life harder!

And of course, hard work is always worth the effort if you get good results. And what better results than a nice, clean, happy home? - Okay, I'm getting it. Any other advice?
Yes! Don't take yourself, or the housework, too seriously. Have some fun! Put up some mischievous signs, or throw the soap suds at someone!

Make Some Hubble Bubble in the Kitchen!
Did you know that there is a form of traditional witchcraft dedicated to making cooking and household tasks sacred? Kitchen witches take everyday, mundane chores and inject a little magic by using rituals, special tools and fun activities to make housework more enjoyable and cooking a joy. By doing so they honour the goddess and create a sacred, positive energy within the home.
You can find out more about this unique form of cottage witchery by reading some of my articles on suite101.

Cooking a meal and cleaning something which means something to us are both actually very sacred acts. Unfortunately, many women have become detached from their home roots, with phrases like "chained to the kitchen sink" and "barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen" ringing in their ears.
Time has become more and more precious in the modern world, with pressure to be successful at work, whilst juggling relationships, children, and of course, the home. The house usually finds itself bottom of the list of priorities, but by making it important again, we can actually use the sacredness of home-keeping as a family hub; a central sanctuary that helps us balance everything else in our lives.

Summer Kitchen

The trick is to restore a sense of joy, specialness and magic to your work. This begins in the kitchen. Rather than seeing cooking as a chore, turn it into a beautiful act of creation, where a nutritious meal is born to nourish and comfort!
View the kitchen as a sacred space, where magic can happen. This is the centre of hearth and home, where we can spread the love and sacredness out into the rest of the home.
No matter your faith, or lack of it. By tending to your home and caring for it, you are honouring your spirituality, your god or goddess, or the Creator himself.
You don't have to be a kitchen witch to apply these principles to your own home. They are available to us all, and help to connect us to nature, the rhythm of life, our ancestral power, and most importantly of all, to ourselves.

The Ancient Art of Feng Shui
Space Clearing and House Blessing with Feng Shui for the Soul
Feng Shui is the ancient art of placement, positioning items and symbolic imagery around the home to create harmony and balance by creating an abundant flow of 'chi', or life energy. Most people think of placing 'cures' around the home when it comes to Feng Shui, and know a little bit about the directions, the Relationship area, the Money area, and so on. If you don't, take a look at one of the great lenses below by other Squidoo lensmasters!
But there are also some very spiritual and nurturing elements to this ancient art. We all know about de-cluttering our homes, but what about going one step further? Space clearing doesn't just clear your house physically, it clears it mentally and spiritually as well.
For a really in-depth look at this subject, I recommend reading 'Feng Shui for the Soul' by Denise Linn, or 'Creating Sacred Space' by Karen Kingston (both available below). There are numerous ways to space clear your home, including:
* Smudging - wafting smudge sticks and incense around the home can help purify and energize
* Psychic Clearing - mentally 'clearing' areas of the home can remove 'stuck' or negative energy, or spirits. One form of doing this is by clapping loudly in the areas to be cleansed
* Singing Bowls - the beautiful sound of the singing bowl helps to purify the energy and raise the vibrational frequency of the house, removing negative energies
* House Blessings - using a combination of techniques, including those above, a ceremony can be performed to 'bless' the house, removing negative energies and placing protection over the home, from angels, spirits of place, or other entities that have meaning to you. This is especially effective to do when moving into a new home, or to remove bad energies after an argument, death or other negative event.
* Placement of crystals - placing crystals around the home raises the vibrational frequency of the room. You can also choose crystals for their appropriate properties, such as calm, healing, protection from electromagnetic stress and so on.
