Most folks consider awakening when they think of the term enlightenment. Awakening is more like discovering that God actually exists, whereas enlightenment is dropping the very thing capable of discovery. There are more 'awakened' folks on the planet than 'enlightened' - most stop breathing the body and drop it like a hot potato with the state of enlightenment. It takes incredible energy to continue interacting with perception post release of it.
