Entrepreneurs have created the world we live in. In fact, we have the good old USA because of entrepreneurs like Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci from whom America gets its name. Entrepreneurs have been around since the beginning of mankind. From a caveman designing a hunting and gathering system to the founders of Google, entrepreneurs have been shaping our lifestyles, innovating our technologies, and championing our freedoms. Many of our more famous people in history have been entrepreneurs.
Benjamin Franklin, the entrepreneur and statesman, was responsible for many innovations that still impact our lives and our freedom today. Thomas Edison lit up our world. Alexander Graham Bell gave us the telephone, which would later give support to the infrastructure of the internet. Henry Ford, the reason I have my Ford F-150 pickup. Andrew Carnegie, Mary Kay, Hewlett Packard, Doris Christopher, Steve Jobs, Bette Nesmith Graham, Bill Gates, David Filo, Jerry Yang, Larry Page, Sergey Brin. All these people have had a monumental impact in our lives.
To make an entire list of all the entrepreneurs who have made a difference in this world (and I believe all of them do in some way) would take too many lifetimes. Everything we have and everything we see came from the innovative mind of an entrepreneur. Sure it may be some scientist or engineer (both can be entrepreneurs) who invented it but it takes an entrepreneur to bring it to the world.
Throughout our history entrepreneurs have led the way. Who will lead our future? Our entrepreneurs of course! Our next generation of entrepreneurs will take a crucial role in the future of this wonderful planet. In his book, The World is Flat, Thomas Friedman talks about the flattening of the world and the leveling of the playing field in regards to the world economy. I believe that the next generation will be competing for jobs globally and not just here at home. In fact, it has already started.
In the next generation our children will have a tougher fight in the job market. This will only increase the necessity for greater numbers of entrepreneurs; entrepreneurs who will be innovating and designing the next billion dollar companies and quite possibly the first trillion dollar company. Our children and the next generation will need these companies and the jobs they provide.
This lens was developed to present an awareness of the importance of the precious entrepreneurial spirit. It is this spirit, I believe, that will find the solution to global warming, the next alternative energy source, the education system to eradicate poverty and give people hope, and continue to create a world we can be proud to call our home.
Becoming an Entrepreneur
Where Do I Start?
Are you now asking yourself, "Am I an entrepreneur?" If not, are you asking yourself, "Can I become an entrepreneur?"To help you answer both of those questions I would like to offer some dictionary definitions of the word entrepreneur:
en·tre·pre·neur-n. A person who organizes, operates, and assumes the risk for a business venture. One who recognizes opportunities and organizes resources to take advantage of the opportunity. Someone who attempts to profit by risk and initiative.
I have a great quote on a poster that I have that goes along with the above definitions. The quote reads," A leader finds the way, goes the way, and shows the way." All of these are great definitions of the word entrepreneur.
Are you any closer now to knowing if you are an entrepreneur or whether you can become an entrepreneur?
Focus on a couple of key words from those definitions: risk and initiative. Do you have what it takes to take risk? Will you have a stroke if you take a significant risk in your life? Do you have the initiative to follow through with that risk?
Man, I hope so!!!!
As an entrepreneur I can boldly say that to be successful you must take risks and have a firm solid drive and initiative to see those risks through to fruition, or in other words, your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
The risks and rewards of risk and initiative are so precisely outlined in the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosoki. That was one of the first books I read when I realized my potential as an entrepreneur. I have read it three times since then and I continue to reflect on its principles and insights. You would do well to purchase a copy of it on your road to becoming an entrepreneur.
You Are Unique!
Yes, you are!
No matter how you want to slice it, look at it, smell it, or read it, you are UNIQUE. How are you unique? I have no idea; you have to figure that out. I do know that you are different than everyone else in the world in that you have your own unique, personal possibilities.Do you want to know something else that's really great? You can spend your whole life discovering those possibilities as you grow, progress, and get to know yourself a little bit better everyday.
What does that have to do with being an entrepreneur? It has so much to do with it that it will blow your mind as you discover that within yourself.
It would be wise for you to begin, if you haven't already, to discover your unique, personal possibilities and find out how you can use them to make this world we live in a better place through your entrepreneurial endeavors.
Look forward to each moment that you discover some new endearing quality and possibility within yourself. As you do you will notice your life will improve and if that doesn't put a smile on your face you are in the wrong lens.
I'll close this module with one of my most favorite quotes by an unknown author:
"There's something that gives radiance to everything, it's the idea of something around the corner."
Always have something to look forward to. Not only in your entrepreneurial quest but also in all areas of your life.
