Global Warming

Should we worry about the environment now that the economy is in trouble?

What do you think? Oil prices are going up, stock markets have gone down. Should we even put our energy into worrying about the environment, or should we make sure we make it through the year financially first?

Environment or Economy: what's your priority?

Environment first

aj2008 says:

Without an environment, we wont have a planet.

BigGirlBlue says:

The economy can always be used as an excuse not to hold the environment in priority. Frankly, it is a poor excuse for our future. Money issues will always be an issue.

CherylK says:

I believe that working toward saving the environment will actually improve the economy. Creating eco jobs will put people to work and lead to learning new technologies. Focus on the environment and the future looks brighter (literally & figuratively) for future generations.

seegreen says:

We should always be concerned with the environment. It's not expensive to be environmentally conscious. It's about the small choices we make every day.

EmmaCooper says:

If we don't look after the environment now, we won't have to worry about the economy in the future!

Mortira says:

When the water, animals, and plants are all gone, we can't exactly eat our money.

feedbuzzard says:

we're all doomed anyway, but let's not rush to extinction

Megal says:

If we don't have an earth then how will we grow our economy?

dok says:

Environment...economy will follow!

Jewelsofawe says:

being earth friendly will save you money and you should always do something about going greener especially with the polar ice caps melting.

onebyneed says:

there are many ways to help the environment and be resourceful with your money...if ya want check out my lens and site
www.squidoo.com/conservegas
www.conservegasimmediately.com

GemstoneScout says:

Both are equally important.
There must be a balance. While I lived in a First world country, and food and job is abundant, and therefore environment concern is a trend.

In third world country, economy is first, if there is no food and no shelter, who cares about environment. But as an eco fan, we have to find substainable method that will help to ensure that there is economy while protecting the environment.

naturegirl7 says:

If we don't put the environment first, we won't have an economy and our world will not be able to feed the humans who have made such a mess of things here on Earth.

RinchenChodron says:

I'm a tree hugger from way back!!!! Money never interested me much.

Economy first

TalesTrailsAndTips2 says:

I say that we need to worry about both - often being environmentally responsible means that we are taking an economic approach as well.

clouda9 says:

I am saying economy first because of our current personal situation and so many others that we know. I'll add that we live as green as we can...recycle, raise our own food, buy from local farmers when we can, and promote green products here on Squidoo.

mglombard says:

I say we need to stabilize the economy first, but through an investment in renewable/clean energy infrastructure and energy efficiency. Send less money to OPEC, generate millions of jobs at home, and reduce our carbon footprint all at the same time. Win, win, win.

flowski says:

We better save this economy. Green living can be more expensive. In many cases, when I don't have cash, I can't pick the eco-friendly alternative!

Yunjana says:

There are not incompatible. It would help our financials to reduce consumption and then help the environment.

spirituality says:

For me personally: I wish I could say I lived very environmentally friendly. I don't recycle as much as I could and I shower way too long. I am a vegetarian though. That should count for something.

Surprising issues you probably didn't know about

Sometimes it seems the only environmental issues people know and care about are global warming and recycling. This lens is about a much less known issue that is equally important.

Special People worth mentioning

These people have really helped getting the environment on the agenda and getting things done.

Save animals from extinction

Protecting nearly extinct species

Saving animals can go in two directions: saving their habitat, or creating a good habitat for them - or simply making sure people know about them. These are lenses from both perspectives.

GREEN Tip of the Day

Pollution

More green lensographies

These lenses deserve special mention. The giants going green lens was created almost simultaneously with this one. I guess 'going green' is in the air right now. Anyhow - I'm now a giant too, and they listed my lens - it's only fair I return the favor.

My lens is based on the principles of useful, informative, well written.

The giants go green lensography focuses on the people who make the best lenses in general: giants - and found their lenses on the environment. Some are funny, some informative, some just plain great. Complements the above very well :)

It's hard to keep up to date on this topic. I've been feeling guilty about not featuring newer green lenses on here. So when TheGreenerMe made her lensography featuring squids going green, I hastened to list that one at least.
