- How Small Businesses Are Helping With the Oil Spill
- Bloggers, inventors and entrepreneurs are pitching in to help the Gulf Coast recover from the worst spill in U.S. history. Envicorp Products - an environmental products company based in Houston that opened its doors in September 2009 - is donating 100 percent of its website sales revenue during the month of June to the National Audobon Society. The company's founders - Tana Collins and Stephanie Collins (best friends, but not related) - say even if they weren't Alabama natives with strong ties to the Gulf region, they'd still be helping out because of their strong feelings about the environment.
- Creators say their reusable bags friendlier to Earth
- The U.S. generated about 13 million tons of waste in the form of plastics in 2008, according to the most recent federal statistics. Of that, almost 7 million tons were nondurable goods, including trash bags and grocery bags, the EPA says. Houston small business owners Tana Collins and Stephanie Collins - lifelong friends who aren't related - hope to reduce some of that waste with a canvas bag their company, Envicorp, developed to replace the ubiquitous plastic bags made of polyethylene found at grocery and retail stores.
