Enya

Enya (born Eithne Ní Bhraonáin) was born into a musical family. Her father, Leo Brennan, was the leader of the Slieve Foy Band, a popular Irish show band; her mother was an amateur musician. With her blend of folk melodies, synthesized backdrops, and classical motifs, Enya created a distinctive style that more closely resembled new age than the folk and Celtic music that provided her initial influences.

Enya is from Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, which she left in 1980 to join the Irish band Clannad, the group that already featured her older brothers and sisters. She stayed with Clannad for two years, then left, hooking up with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, with whom she recorded film and television scores. The result was a successful album of TV music for the BBC.

Enya then recorded Watermark (1988), which featured her distinctive, flowing music and multi-overdubbed trancelike singing; the album sold four million copies worldwide. Watermark established Enya as an international star and launched a successful career that lasted well into the '90s.

Only Time Video

Only Time was first released in 2000. The release of this single coincided with the release of the album A Day Without Rain. In 2001 "Only Time" was released again as a remix.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, her song "Only Time" was used as a backdrop in many radio and TV reports about the attacks. She initially frowned upon this use, especially when many bootlegged versions of "Only Time" mixed with sound effects from the attack began to appear.

Only Time Lyrics

Who can say
where the road goes
where the day flows
- only time
And who can say
if your love grows
as your heart chose
-only time

Who can say
why your heart sighs
as your love flies
-only time
And who can say
why your heart cries
when your love lies
-only time

Who can say
when the roads meet
that love might be
in your heart.
And who can say
when the day sleeps
if the night keeps
all your heart.

Night keeps all your heart

Who can say
if your love grows
as your heart chose
-only time
And who can say
where the road goes
where the day flows
-only time

Who knows - only time
Who knows - only time

Orinoco Flow Video

Orinoco Flow is the name of a 1988 UK #1 single by Enya. The song is often incorrectly referred to as "Sail Away," a phrase repeated during the chorus. The American version of the single, however, was retitled "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)".

In 1998 a special edition 10th anniversary remix single was released. The song was highly popular in the early '90s and was featured on many pop music compilations.

The division of syllables to follow the pattern of music may trick the listener into thinking that the song is written in Latin (as some Enya tracks are), but the lyrics are in fact English. At the end of the song she pays tribute to Warner Brothers Music UK CEO Rob Dickins and makes a more veiled reference to producer Ross Cullum.

The title of the song refers to the London recording studio, Orinoco Studios (now Miloco Studios), in which it was recorded, rather than the Venezuelan river Orinoco, although it is likely a deliberate dual reference.

The song also received increased popularity after featuring in a US commercial for car maker Volkswagen.

Orinoco Flow Lyrics

Let me sail, let me sail,
let the orinoco flow,
Let me reach, let me beach
On the shores of Tripoli.
Let me sail, let me sail,
Let me crash upon your shore,
Let me reach, let me beach
Far beyond the Yellow Sea.

From Bissau to Palau - in the shade of Avalon,
From Fiji to Tiree and the Isles of Ebony,
From Peru to Cebu hear the power of Babylon,
From Bali to Cali - far beneath the Coral Sea.

From the North to the South,
Ebudæ into Khartoum,
From the deep sea of Clouds
To the island of the moon,
Carry me on the waves
To the lands I've never been,
Carry me on the waves
To the lands I've never seen.

We can sail, we can sail...
We can steer, we can near
With Rob Dickins at the wheel,
We can sigh, say goodbye
Ross and his dependencies
We can sail, we can sail...
