The Latest Ferrari Supercar
From 2003 until 2004, Ferrari hand-built 400 supercars that are unlike any other on earth. Despite a hefty price tag, these cars were sold long before they had a chance to reach dealer's lots.
Who Would Buy This $650,000 Car?
Anyone with $650,000
Although often referred to as the Ferrari Enzo, this supercar is officially the Enzo Ferrari, named after the famed founder of the Italian sports car company. It was introduced to the world at the 2002 Paris Motor Show to an excited crowd.
There was no need to rush to local Ferrari dealerships to pre-order this piece of art on wheels - Ferrari sold this car by invite only. Only previous Ferrari buyers could purchase the Enzo, with special preference given to those who had bought the Ferrari F40 and F50, the previous two flagship cars from the company.
With a retail price tag of $643,000, this car was obviously intended for those who do not have to worry about price. In fact, many buyers recognized a profit opportunity when buying this car. With supplies limited and strong demand, it was clear that this was going to be one of those few cars that is actually gains value from the moment it's bought. Today, Enzo Ferrari's typically sell in the $1,000,000 range.
The V12 engine on this car is standard fare for a supercar. It makes 651 horsepower and 660 lbs/square foot of torque at 7800 rpm. Those are impressive numbers, but hardly earth-shattering for its category. It was never intended to be the fastest car, although it was intended to be very fast. It can reach 60 miles per hour in 3.14 seconds and do the quarter-mile in about 11 seconds, which are very good numbers, but not as fast as certain other cars like the Bugatti Veyron.
Some special editions of the Enzo have been produced. The Ferrari FXX is based on the same design as the Enzo, although with mostly new mechanical parts. It was only sold to previous Ferrari buyers, and it is not street legal. Buyers are not even allowed to actually possess the car without Ferrari's supervision.
The Ferrari P4/5 by Pinanfarina is a one-off commissioned by a Ferrari collector using an original Enzo as the base car. It has been a hit with Ferrari fans, who have dubbed it the F70.
The Maserati MC12 and Maserati Birdcage 75th are also based on the Enzo.
