Plants Play a Vital Role in Our Lives

People are paying more attention to preventative health, nutrition, and the benefits of various natural treatments that are offered without side effects.

Aromatherapy is a healing modality that uses the power of therapeutic grade essential oils. These aromatic oils contain the life force of the plant that helps the body heal, naturally repair, and retard aging.

My experiences and personal growth with essential oils are listed here. I studied chemistry of essential oils with Dr. David Stewart and Young Living Essential Oils. I have invested much time and money in my education and continue to learn about the healing properties of essential oils. I add new material regularly to keep this site fresh, so check back often!

About Essential Oils

Fragrance and Healing

Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. Essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs.

The main purpose of essential oils is that of healing.

In the early 1900s, a French chemist, Rene Gattefosse laid the foundation for modern aromatherapy. He burned his hand and plunged it in a vat of lavender oil and was amazed to see how fast the burn healed.

Dr. Jean Valnet, a French ex-army surgeon used essential oils to treat wounds and burns. Today, many physicians are using aromatherapy for healing purposes.

How Do Essential Oils Work?

Medicines for Mankind

Essential oils and blood share several common properties: they fight infection, contain hormone-like compounds, and initiate regeneration.

Essential oils have a chemical structure that is similar to that found in human cells and tissues. This makes essential oils compatible with human protein and enables them to be readily identified and accepted by the body.

Essential oils have the ability to penetrate cell membranes and diffuse throughout the body in a matter of minutes. In the human body, essential oils stimulate the secretion of antibodies, neurotransmitters, endorphins, hormones, and enzymes.

The Science Behind Essential Oils

It has become evident that we have not conquered dreaded infectious diseases, such as the Ebola virus, hantavirus, AIDS, HIV and news strains of tuberculosis and influenza. Essential oils may assume an important role in combating new mutations of microbes. More researchers are undertaking serious clinical studies on the use of essential oils for these diseases.

Research conducted at Weber State University as well as other documented research, indicates that most viruses, fungi, and bacteria cannot live in the presence of many essential oils.

Because many oils have strong antimicrobial properties, they can be diffused to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria and viruses. Antiviral essential oils are effective in preventing colds and flu as well as helping the body defenses, once the infection has started.

Antifungal Effects of Essential Oils

Molds and Fungi

Recent research at the USDA Forest Service in Wisconsin reveals that essential oils may be useful moldicidal surface-treatments or fumigants for wood and wood products.

Treated with the antifungal essential oils, molds and fungi growing on trees, plants and flowers do not survive long and simply disappear.

The Healing Benefits of Essential Oils

All essential oils are antiseptic and many possess antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Essential oils have a bio-frequency that is several times higher than the frequency of herbs, food, and the human body. They can quickly raise the frequency of the human body, restoring it to its normal, healthy level.

Some of the benefits of aromatherapy are relaxation, increased energy, and pleasant memory association. Other benefits include enhanced immunity, appetite stimulants or suppressants, weight management, and hormone regulation.

The Safety Factors Using Essential Oils

How they Differ from Synthetic Chemicals

Pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils rarely cause negative side effects or leave toxins behind. This carries implications for those who want to maintain or regain their health quickly and naturally.

Because of their complexity, essential oils do not disturb the body's homeostasis: if one constituent exerts too strong an effect, another may block or counteract it. Synthetic chemicals usually have one action and often disrupt the body's natural balance.

Anyone venturing into the world of therapy with essential oils must use the purest quality oils available. Inferior quality or adulterated oils mostly likely will not produce therapeutic results. All the therapeutic grade essential oils mentioned here have been graded according to AFNOR standards.

Ways to Use Essential Oils

Which Oils to Use First

In the Maker's Diet, Dr. Jordan Rubin recommends 14 essential oils that have unique healing properties. He suggests putting 5-10 drops (total) of these top healing oils in a bath for a healing treat.

While essential oils may be used as dietary supplements, all of the following essential oils may be diffused, applied topically, applied to the soles of the feet or added to bathwater. Refer to individual oils for specific benefits.

In the next section, I list my favorite therapeutic grade essential oils by Young Living that you can use to ease physical conditions and re-balance emotional and mental states.

Lavender

The Most Versatile Essential Oil

Lavender has a fresh, sweet, and floral aroma that is calming and soothing. Often used for relaxation, lavender oil offers balancing properties that boost stamina and energy, is highly regarded for skin care and beauty and often used to cleanse minor cuts, bruises, or skin irritations. A few ways to use:

Massage into the back of the neck or the bottom of the feet for calming.

Rub a drop in your palm and smooth over the pillow to aid with sleep.

Soothe a minor burn by applying 2-3 drops on the affected area.

Add a few drops to a cotton ball and place in closets and drawers to scent linens and repeal moths and insects.

Place a few drops on a wet cloth to deodorize and freshen your laundry.

Diffuse to minimize seasonal reactions to pollen and dust mites.

Frankincense

Boswellia carteri

Frankincense has a sweet, warm, balsamic aroma that is stimulating and elevating to the mind. It may be useful for visualizing, improving one's spiritual connection, and centering. Frankincense also has comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair. Frankincense is a valuable ingredient in skincare products for aging and dry skin.

Inhale, diffuse, or apply topically on the body to deepen breathing and induce calmness.

Apply 1-2 drops directly onto a bug bite to reduce itching and swelling.

Diffuse to enrich prayer and meditation.

Drop onto minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises to reduce redness and discomfort.

Apply 1-2 drops of frankincense to the face and neck daily to help repair sun damage and renew skin.

Massage several drops on the temples or back of the neck for stress relief.

Drop in a capsule and swallow for immune support.

Rub on the feet or back of the neck to soothe overactive children.

Lemon

Citrus limon

Lemon has an uplifting, fresh scent. You'll never run out of ways to use this multipurpose essential oil, from cooking and cleaning to creating a fresh atmosphere in your home. Whether you want to enjoy lemon's aromatic tones, need an all-natural boost to your complexion, or want to add some zest to your recipes, lemon is so versatile that you'll quickly find you can't go a day without it!

Things to know about lemon;

The naturally-occurring chemicals that give lemon its many benefits are d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant, and citral.

Lemon essential oil isn't distilled, but is instead cold pressed from the lemon rind.
Lemon removes excess sebum and oils from the skin, making it wonderful for unclogging pores.

Some ideal companion oils to lemon include frankincense, peppermint, sandalwood, and ylang ylang.

Combine 2-3 drops with water in a spray bottle to help clean and sanitize surfaces.

Soothe or prevent corns, callous, or bunions by rubbing oil on affected area, morning and evening.

Fill in a bowl with cold water, add 2-3 drops of oil, drench fruit in water to preserve shelf life.

Add a drop to your dishwasher before the wash cycle for spot-free dishes.

Massage oil into cellulite to help improve circulation and help eliminate waste from cells.

Put 10-15 drops in a gallon of carpet cleaning solution to help pull out stains, brighten carpet and rugs, and leave a fresh smell in the room.

PanAway Blend

PanAway contains wintergreen, clove, peppermint, and helichrysum.

A proprietary blends of soothing essential oils, PanAway oil blend is most often used for body massage to support the circulatory system and help ease muscle and joint discomfort.

Apply topically to help relieve an area of discomfort, stressed muscles, or cramping.

Rub a drop on the temples, forehead, and back of the neck to help alleviate head pressure.

Mix oil with V-6 Massage Oil and use topically to ease growing discomfort in children and young adults.

Massage 2-3 drops at the base of the spine to soothe back pressure.

Apply several drops to the bottoms of the feet for a soothing, relaxing foot massage.

Add 3-4 drops onto a hot towel and place over the abdomen to ease cramps and bloating.

Peppermint

Mentha piperita

Peppermint has a strong, clean, fresh, minty aroma. One of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion. Research shows the inhalation of peppermint oil helps trigger a sense of fullness after meals, enhances your sense of taste and smell, and improves concentration and mental activity. Applied topically, peppermint oil leaves a soothing, cooling sensation that can alleviate bodily discomfort.

Add a drop to herbal tea to help aid in digestion.

Inhale before and during a workout to help boost mood and reduce fatigue.

Massage several drops on the abdomen, place a drop on the top of the tongue or wrists, or inhale to soothe minor stomach discomfort associated with travel.

Rub 1 drop on the temples, forehead, over the sinuses (avoid contact with eyes), and on the back of the neck to help soothe head pressure.

Place 2 drops on the tongue and rub another drop of oil under the nose to help improve concentration and alertness.

Diffuse for energy and mental clarity.

Idaho Balsam Fir

Idaho Balsam fir is harvested during the frozen, deep dark of winter because its medicinal properties and chemical constituents were most potent during this time. According to Gary Young, the trees are saturated with the oils then, as the oils protect the needles from freezing. Just being in the presence of the freshly fallen trees and chippers is intoxicating! Gary truly is an expert in his field of aromatherapy.

The properties of therapeutic grade Idaho Balsam Fir:

~Good for respiratory conditions (asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, chronic coughs, sore throat, colds, flu)
~Fever
~Muscular, arthritic, back and rheumatic pain, inflammation, osteoporosis
~Cuts, infections, wounds
~Nervous tension, stress, anxiety, depression
~It may enhance the production of hGH (human Growth Hormone) and reduce the levels of cortisol
~Very effective for soothing overworked or tired muscles (balsam fir with marjoram), ligaments (balsam fir with lemongrass), tendons and joints

Emotionally:
~It creates a feeling of grounding, anchoring, and empowerment. It can stimulate the mind while allowing the body to relax. It has been described as appeasing, elevating and opening. It is also very emotionally balancing.

Essential Oils for First Aid

Preventing Flu, Colds, Sinusitis, and Allergies

Along with building up my immune system with probiotics (I like Life 5 from Young Living), I take Inner Defense at the first sign of a respiratory infection.

Featuring the immune-boosting power of Thieves essential oil blend and the added benefit of essential oils like oregano and thyme, Inner Defense offers crucial support when the body is stressed. Inner Defense strengthens the immune system and energizes systemic defenses, particularly those with a weakened immunological response.
