Healing Oils of Ancient Scripture
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God." Word is an expression of energy. When God created the plants by his speaking voice, he imbued them with his Word and his intelligence.
In Philippians 4:18, Paul refers to "a fragrant offering" as an acceptable gift "and pleasing to God," which is in reference to the aromas of essential oils used in the incenses, anointing oils, and sacrifices of worship among Jews and early Christians.

What are Essential Oils?
The Healing Properties of Essential Oils
If you can't smell an oil at a distance, it probably isn't essential. Exceptions to this are some natural oils that have only a faint fragrance not always perceptible to people. The healing oils of the Bible are all aromatic even when their aromas are not strong. That is to say, they are volatile and can be inhaled and taken into the body via the lungs into the blood stream. They go directly to the brain, crossing the blood-brain barrier. Thus, originates the term "aromatherapy" where essential oils can be applied for therapeutic purposes merely by inhaling or breathing their aromas.Essential oils are composed of small molecules that can penetrate every cell, administering healing therapy at the most fundamental level of our bodies. Because of their structural complexity, essential oils are able to perform multiple functions with just a few drops diffused in the air or applied to the skin.
Essential oils differ from fatty oils for cooking. Fatty oils are composed of molecules that are too large to penetrate at the cellular level. The familiar vegetable oils that we use for cooking have no therapeutic powers, in the way that essential oils do.
The Uses of Essential Oils
In Proverbs 21:20 we read: "There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise." At least 33 different essential oils or aromatic oil-producing plants are mentioned in the Bible.Essential oils were inhaled, applied to the body, and taken internally by peoples of the Bible. Their benefits extend to every aspect of our being, including physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. David alluded to this in Psalm 51:7 when he wrote, "Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean: wash me and I shall be whiter than snow." The ancient peoples of the Holy Land understood the use of aromatic essential oils for every purpose from maintaining wellness to physical healing, emotional cleansing, or purification from sin.
Modern medicine has attempted to duplicate the chemical constituents and healing capabilities of essential oils but cannot. The medications made by man cannot compare to the healing capabilities of essential oils. Synthetic pharmaceuticals lack the life force, the intelligence and vibrational energy of essential oils. Most synthetic drugs have multiple undesirable side effects - some of which are deadly.
Essential oils have no serious side effects that are deadly. Essential oils work in harmony with the body, making them safe, unlike when multiple drugs are taken, causing drug interaction.
In the next section, find the attributes of some of the biblical oils from around the world.
Myrrh
Commiphora myrrha
"And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh; but he received it not". - Mark 15:23Myrrh is the most frequently mentioned essential oil of the Bible (156 times). It is the first oil mentioned in the Old Testament (Genesis 37:25) and the last to be mentioned in the New Testament (Revelation 18:13. It is one of the first to be received by the Christ child along with frankincense and the last to be offered as he stood on the cross (Mark 15:23).
Also used in ancient times for skin conditions, oral hygiene, embalming, and as an insect repellant. Egyptians carried cones of fat on their heads containing Myrrh that would melt in the desert heat and keep their bodies bathed in Myrrh and other oils.
Aloes/Sandalwood
Santalum album
"And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight." - John 19:39Biblical aloe was an oil imported from India, also known as sandalwood. Sandalwood is known for its ability to nurture various systems of the body by:
*Oxygenating tissue, including the brain
*Stimulating our natural secretion of melatonin
*Enabling a good night's sleep
*Preparing bodies for burial.
Scriptures: Numbers 24:6, Psalms 45:8, Proverbs 7:17, Song of Solomon 4:14
Cedarwood
Cedrus atlantica
"The trees of the Lord are full of sap, the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted." Psalms 104:16King Solomon built his palace and temple from unfinished cedarwood (I Kings 6:9-15). This choice provided Solomon an environment in which he inhaled molecules of cedarwood oil continuously and in which he could think clearly and administer wise decisions. Smelling cedarwood has the following effects:
*Clearing the mind of clutter
*Clarifying our thinking
The modern source of most "cedarwood" essential oil is juniper, a coniferous evergreen known as "red cedar".
Scripture: Leviticus 14:51, 14:52, Numbers 19:6, 24;6, 2 Samuel 5:11, 7:2, 7:7, 1 Kings 4:33, 5:6, 5:8, 5:10, 6:9, 9:11, 2 Kings 19:23, 1 Chronicles 22:4, 2 Chronicles 1:15, 2:8, 9:27, Ezra 3:7, Isaiah 41:19, Ezekiel 17:3, 17:22, 17:23, Zechariah 11:2.
Onycha
Styrax benzoin
"And the Lord said unto Moses, take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanium, these sweet spices with pure frankincense...and make an incense." - Exodus 30-34-35While onycha oil was used as holy incense, its modern uses have been extensive. It has a wonderful aroma of vanilla because it contains vanilla aldehyde, also found in the vanilla plant. Onycha contains more acids than any other oil. The oils is used for:
*providing antiseptic service to the body
*producing a calming scent.
Scripture: Mentioned one time directly and 54 times indirectly as holy incense.
Spikenard
Nardostachys jatamansi
"There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat". - Matthew 26-6It was an ancient custom to honor distinguished guests by anointing their head or feet with spikenard. Jesus was anointed twice with spikenard the week before he died (Matthew 26:6-7 and John 12:1-3) The fragrance from the essential oil has been used in:
*Relieving fear and anxiety
*Preparing the body for burial
Scripture: Song of Solomon 1:12, 4:13-14, Mark 14:3, John 12:3, Luke 7:36-38, John 12:1-3
The Act of Anointing
The most common Biblical act we associate with oil is anointing. One of the most familiar lines is in the 23 Psalms, "Thou anointest my head with oil." Since that line was written by a king, and the anointer was God, the oil could have been the "holy anointing oil" of the Isralites, which was a blend of 82 percent essential oil in a base of olive oil (Exodus 30:23-24).The true meaning of anointing has been lost in modern times. Most Christian ministers consider the oil as symbolic only and do not recognize the medicinal value. Many use grocery store oils for anointing. These may have ritual value but are not Biblical.
Jesus schooled his disciples in the spiritual art of anointing to bring about healing using oil (usually olive) that contain precious spices and other aromatic oils. (Mark 6:13).
Believers were also directed to anoint with oil during a fast in Matthew 6:17 and use oil when praying for the sick in James 5:14.
Many believers today are discovering that anointing with beautifully fragrant oils can be spiritually enhancing.

Welcome to the Healing World of Essential Oils
Essential oils are God's gift to everyone. They can never be copyrighted or trademarked or patented for profit. Anyone with the patience and willingness to learn can produce them or find producers they can trust.
The major oils discussed here are commercially available from one or more sources. There are a number of growers and distillers in North America that produce high quality essential oils fulfilling all the requirements for therapeutic grade.
The label should read: "100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oil supplement." Further, "AFNOR" or "AFNOR-EC" on the label indicates that it fulfills European standards for essential oils. Synthetic or adulterated oils may not give you the desired result and may even be harmful. Regardless of the cost, there can be no substitute for plant derived essential oils for healing purposes. I recommend Young Living Essential Oils.
