Pure essential oils became available through the invention of distillation. In ancient times, our forefathers simply burned the dried herb. Dried herbs and resins release their fragrances when burned on hot coals or rock. It was probably one of the earliest healing methods.
The healing oils of the Bible are all aromatic. They are called "essential" because they are necessary to the life of the plant and contain the "essence" of the plant. What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds.The chemistry of essential oils is very complex: each one may contain hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds. In addition, essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. The distillation process is what makes essential oils so concentrated. Fir
Abies balsamea, Abies grandis
"Ephraim (shall say), What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard (him) and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found." Hosea 14:8A native of northern Europe, the fir is well known as the Christmas tree. It produces a clear essential oil that is distilled from the needles.
Healing Properties: Anti-tumor, anti-cancerous, anti-oxidant.
Medical Uses: Respiratory/sinus infections.
Balsam Fir has a refreshing and uplifting scent and has a soothing effect on muscles and body aches and pains. According to research, the scent is stimulating and increases energy. The woodsy smell makes most people feel happy and may be one of the reasons the Yule log and Christmas tree were brought into the home at a time when the daylight hours are short and people tend to get depressed.

Frankincense

"And thou shall put oil upon it, and lay frankincense thereon: it (is) a meat offering." Leviticus 2:15Frankincense was used for religious rituals, flavoring of food, and for all manner of healing purposes. Frankincense is the second most mentioned essential oil in the Bible. Ancient Egyptians had a saying that "frankincense could heal anything from gout to a broken head." This essential oil has been used by various religions and royalty to help with:
*Reducing anxiety and concerns
*Promoting focus on spiritual matter.
Frankincense was used to anoint the newborn sons of kings and priests, which may have been why it was brought to the baby Jesus. The three holy kings believed that the most precious gifts were gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
The Catholic Church still uses frankincense in its basic form during mass and other ceremonies. Most priests are unfamiliar with the herb's effects or how frankincense may harmonize with other herbs.
To this day, in many Alpine regions, incense is traditionally burned in houses and barns, especially between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Jupiter, sage, and pine are the oils most often used.
Frankincense has strong disinfectant properties, which is important, when people gather in churches and temples. Burning frankincense is a welcome fragrant and healthy ritual.

Hyssop
Hyssopus officinalis
"Take a branch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin and strike the lintel and the two side posts." - Exodus 12:22"Animal sacrifices were offered almost daily in Jewish temples which could result in a bad odor problem. However, the Jewish congregation regularly supplied the priest with fresh fragrant herbs which were scattered on the temple floor each morning. When people walked over them, crushing their leaves and stems, the fragrant oils would be released and freshen the air. The scripture above refers to the first Passover." - Dr. David Stewart
Jesus was offered a sponge with sour wine extended with a fragrant branch of hyssop. Why hyssop? Crucifixion is death by slow suffocation as one's lungs gradually fill up with fluid. Breathing the scent of hyssop may have been offered by ladies of mercy to those dying of crucifixion to help ease their congestion and provide some relief both physically and emotionally.
Hyssop has a fresh, woodsy scent that is slightly sweet.

Myrtle
Myrtus communis
"Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off." Isaiah 55:13To the ancient Jews, the myrtle tree was a symbol of peace and justice as well as a source for healing oil. In celebration of their freedom from Babylonian capacity and the restoration of the law of Moses, the Jews gathered branches of myrtle. In Biblical times, myrtle oil was used for:
*Restoring normal thyroid function
*Purifying from uncleanliness
*Decongesting the respiratory tract and sinuses.
This small, attractive North African tree now grows throughout the Mediterranean. The Greeks and Romans honored poets with myrtle leaves to symbolize their unending fame.
Myrtle has a clear, fresh, herbaceous scent somewhat similar to eucalyptus.
