A modern day hobby, ephemera as a term formerly referred to short-lived insects.  It was later extended to apply to the minor printed documents of everyday life (tickets, handbills, labels, advertising material, etc) produced specifically for short-term use.

The conservation and study of printed ephemera has increased in recent years. The Ephemera Society, founded in London in 1975, now has offshoots in the USA, Canada, Australia, and a number of European countries.

Fragments of the Everyday: A Book of Australian Ephemera

Remember when a week at the Surfers Paradise El Dorado Hotel was the ultimate holiday for sun-worshippers? Or when taking a road trip with the new caravan was the only way to see Australia? Items of ephemera have a special capacity to jog those memories of time past: the menu from a sumptuous anniversary dinner, your ticket to an AFL football final or the program form the opening night of Cats.

Richard Stone has drawn on his extensive knowledge of the National Library of Australia's treasure trove of ephemera to compile this fascinating visual journey. Whether designed to inform, persuade or shock, these remarkable 'reminders', beautifully reproduced, are a fascinating record of Australian life over the last 150 years.

It's from the New York City Summer Festival of 1966. NY was then depicted as "The City with Everything"

About Tom Murphy

We all have a "hobby"... some collect stamps, some collect coins, others do scrapbooking, and others play golf... but we all do something that we enjoy and find relaxing.

One of the newest hobbies... actually it's quite old but has just recently become popular, ... is the collecting of written and printed matter published with a short intended lifetime. Things like train schedules, posters, postcards, baseball cards, tickets, greeting cards, stock certificates and photographs.

This lense will, over time, explore this "new" hobby and perhaps introduce you to something you have been doing for a long time.. without knowledge of its real name... Ephemera.

Enjoy!
