Healthy Habits Slash Heart Disease Chances

While it has been touted for thousands of years, wine is the "new" buzzword in the health and nutrition industry. The scientific community finally started taking wine's health benefits seriously in 1991 after the television show 60-Minutes reported on the famous 'French Paradox' study in which people in France were less likely to die of heart attacks than Americans despite similar high fat diets. The study concluded that the consumption of red wine contributes to improved cardiovascular health.

Women and Heart Disease

Who Is Most At Risk For Heart Disease?

Some heart disease risk factors can be controlled. Some cannot. 1.2 million heart attacks each year are caused by coronary artery disease. Staggering? Add this, more than 40% of persons suffering a heart attack will die. Even worse? 335,000 will die either in the emergency room or before even making it to the hospital. Over 7 million Americans have suffered a heart attack in their lifetime.

Known Risk Factors (Uncontrolled)
Male
Older age
Family history of heart disease
Post-menopausal
Race (African Americans, American Indians, and Mexican Americans are more likely to have heart disease than Caucasians)

Known Risk Factors (Controlled)
Smoking.
High LDL, or "bad" cholesterol and low HDL, or "good" cholesterol.
Uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure).
Physical inactivity.
Obesity (more than 20% over one's ideal body weight).
Uncontrolled diabetes.
High C-reactive protein.
Uncontrolled stress and anger.

Only One In Three Women Believe They Are Personally At Risk For Heart Disease

A Lifetime Women's Pulse Poll (released February 1, 2006), conducted in conjunction with leading national health experts and organizations, reveals that women are not only aware of the dangers of heart disease, they also recognize that it is the #1 killer of women. However, few even acknowledge their personal risk.

In Wine There Is Health

In Vino Sanitas

Resveratrol is found in more than 70 plants including grapes, wine, grape juice, peanuts, and berries of the vaccinum species, including blueberries, bilberries, and cranberries

Laboratory studies with Resveratrol have demonstrated an impressive list of health benefits, including roles as antioxidants, cancer preventative agents, blood thinners, and blood pressure lowering compounds.

Resveratrol was first discovered to have anti-aging properties by David Sinclair, and their colleagues in 2003. In a study published in the journal Nature, scientists found that the chemical mimics the effect of a low-calorie diet, which has been found to extend the lives of lab rats by 30 to 50 percent. "It needs more study, but there's the potential that human life could be extended, too," says David Sinclair, a Harvard researcher who coauthored the study.

Mice that were fed high calorie diets supplemented with Resveratrol seemed to be protected against obesity-related health effects. While a single dose of up to five grams of resveratrol has been demonstrated to show no serious adverse effects in healthy volunteers, Dr Fischer-Posovszky cautions against the use of high doses over long periods of time until more is known about all of the compound's possible effects.

"Resveratrol has anti-obesity properties by exerting its effects directly on the fat cells," Dr Fischer-Posovszky stated. "Thus, resveratrol might help to prevent development of obesity or might be suited to treating obesity."

More recently, reports on the potential for resveratrol to inhibit the development of cancer and extend lifespan in cell culture and animal models have continued to generate scientific interest.

The compound seems to fight cancer by inducing malignant cells to undergo a form of programmed cell suicide called apoptosis. Resveratrol, but not EGCG, suppressed mammary carcinogenesis (fewer tumors per rat and longer tumor latency). Analysis of mammary whole mounts from 50-day-old rats revealed that resveratrol, but not EGCG, treatment resulted in more differentiated lobular structures.

Resveratrol was able to reverse damages caused by the administration of the chemotherapeutic drug Bleomycin. Resveratrol also helped to reduce brain damage and oxidative damage of the liver during ethanol intoxication.

Currently scientists are exploring additional potential health benefits of resveratrol.

Supplement For Maximum Health

Pro's or No's?

Few of us eat very well, and nutritional deficiencies are very common. This is especially a problem for the elderly and hospitalized patients. Even many supposedly "normal" people have been found to be nutritionally deficient. For example, in a 30-month study of 800 patients in two U.S. hospitals, who were admitted for conditions not normally associated with malnutrition (pneumonia, hip fracture, etc.), blood tests found 55% to be malnourished. The malnourished surgical patients stayed in the hospital an average of five days longer than the adequately nourished patients.

In a study of 402 elderly Europeans living at home, the nutrient content of their diet was found to be low: folic acid intake was low in 100% of those studied, zinc in 87%, vitamin B6 in 83%, and vitamin D in 62%.

The Warning Signs Will Tell You

Multivitamins are contained in food; a well-balanced diet usually provides all of the vitamins required. However, there are times, such as during pregnancy and childhood, when your body needs more vitamins than usual.

Multivitamins are also recommended for people with nutrient-depleting diseases of the gastrointestinal system, diabetes or cancer. Those who are strict vegetarians and people on restricted diets should also consider a multivitamin to replace nutrients they may not be receiving through diet alone.

Times of illness and incapacitation usually require extra supplementation also, because the body is healing and the nutritional requirements are greater

Multivitamins are also said to be more efficient in liquid form, as the body may absorb liquid multivitamin supplements five times more efficiently than multivitamins in pill form

Multivitamins are the most convenient way to get vitamins to your body that would otherwise be left out.
