Very useful info. i think GIMP has bright future, but it needs more tutorials, manuals, how-tos, more documentation... Thumbs up!
  • CoCo Nov 6, 2011 @ 9:28 pm | delete
Thank you thank you thank you! This was exactly what I needed and you made it all so easy. Gimp opened the eps file first try with no problem at all.
  • Jeff E. Oct 21, 2011 @ 12:15 am | delete
Thank you. Great instructions for getting gimp to open an eps file. Very staight forward. Worked the first time for me.

Gimp has some significant differences to photoshop so on a steep learning curve
  • Craftybegonia Sep 13, 2011 @ 7:09 pm | delete

  • davidheindel Aug 22, 2011 @ 2:06 pm | delete
Loved the explanation you gave. A few tweaks for 64-bit W7, and GS version 9.02, and it worked like a charm! :-)
  • Ander Jul 2, 2011 @ 5:30 am | delete

  • RubVen Dec 23, 2010 @ 5:50 am | delete
If it was that simple (just a system variable, I wonder why I didn't solve it before. Thank you very much for a good initiative, to share this knowledge with others.

It is now working without problems - perfect :o)
  • searcher Nov 26, 2010 @ 2:16 pm | delete
For some reason the file on http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost didn't work for me. So I downloaded it from http://ghostscript.com/releases/ (all the way to the bottom). That one worked like a charm.
  • holiday_helper Nov 11, 2010 @ 8:52 am | delete
nevermind my previous post - it works now! I was using the gswin32c.exe file and needed to remove the "c". thanx!
  • holiday_helper Nov 11, 2010 @ 8:36 am | delete
Great lens :) It sounds very straightforward, but I'm trying to use GIMP Portable on my USB, and it doesn't seem to find the ghostscript, even after following the directions above. Any ideas?
  • Guest Oct 22, 2010 @ 5:05 am | delete
    Perfect! thanks
  • HandsomeBWonderful Oct 14, 2010 @ 2:09 pm | delete

  • Paul Aug 10, 2010 @ 3:21 pm | delete
This worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch!
  • Gardfield Aug 9, 2010 @ 7:01 am | delete
It works for me on a WinXP SP3. No need to copy Ghostscript binaries to GIMP directory. Thanks for sharing :-)

However, in my case the quality of the image rendered is kind of low, specially colors, nothing to do with the original :-(
  • Paul Godden Sep 9, 2010 @ 6:02 am | delete
Hi Gardfield, just incase, try playing with the antialiasing settings when you import. This can have a big affect.
  • Indi Aug 2, 2010 @ 12:35 pm | delete
    Thank you so much!
  • Spencer9 Jul 22, 2010 @ 10:40 am | delete
I'm not sure why, but when I did this on Windows 7, I had to both follow the steps described above and also copy all the files from the ghostscript bin folder into GIMP's bin folder. Anyway thanks for the clear instruction.
  • Ryan Oct 4, 2010 @ 4:47 pm | delete
thank you! this worked on windows 7. just copy the bin folder
  • Lee Jun 27, 2010 @ 12:51 am | delete
Thanks this works perfectly in Vista.
  • garebear Jun 26, 2010 @ 1:10 pm | delete
    Works for me! (windows 7)
  • Mayren Jun 8, 2010 @ 12:38 pm | delete
To get this to work on a Windows XP machine i had to add more steps:

go to the actual Ghostscript EXE files in it's BIN directory. Drag and drop them into
GIMP's BIN directory. Reopen GIMP and done.
  • BeeGee Jun 7, 2010 @ 12:54 pm | delete
I really appreciate the help...it works thanks a ton
  • miramax Jun 7, 2010 @ 6:28 am | delete

  • Rainer May 19, 2010 @ 8:19 pm | delete
Thank you! Works perfectly (Windows 7)
  • Polgara Apr 13, 2010 @ 11:31 pm | delete
    Thank you! good instructions.
if it doesn't work right away and you did everything right, try to close and reload the GIMP with the new commands. it should do the final trick.
  • Paul Colby Mar 29, 2010 @ 8:14 pm | delete

  • Art Vandlay Nov 12, 2009 @ 1:56 pm | delete
    Thanks excellent work!
  • mrhammerstein Nov 6, 2009 @ 5:12 pm | delete
i can't tell you how much this saved me at work. i could only get a 100dpi png out of autocad, but i could get an eps out, but nothing to then save it as a png at 300 dpi. this worked perfect.

you just made my blood pressure drop.
  • Joel Oct 20, 2009 @ 10:10 am | delete

Error starting Ghostscript. Make sure that Ghostscript is installed and - if necessary - use the environment variable GS_PROG to tell GIMP about its location.
(Failed to execute child process (No such file or directory))

uuum, yeh...i don't know what i am doing wrong...i followed all of the instructions and put in the proper directory...but that is the message i get...
