Why such phenomenal growth of interest in EQ and what's next?
Search for emotional intelligence at Amazon in 1995 and find one book on the subject by Daniel Goleman. Seach today and find over 400! Showing even greater percentage growth, a Google search today yields almost 5,000,000 page links.
Instead of the puzzled "Hunh, What is that?" reponse from most business folks, "emotional intelligence" is now a business buzz word and more and more companies are investing in EQ development.
As my grandson might say, "What's up with that?" Why the phenomenal growth in interest in emotional intelligence? For one thing - It works! As more and more documented evidence of how EQ increased performance, productivity and employee engagement is being presented, more organizations are buying in. But something else I see as a powerful driver is that EQ has become an icon for peoples unmet needs for emotional connection with themselves and others. The workplace is changing. As humans evolve, people at work are demanding more wholeness and balance and that means better workplace relationships and a nurturing environment, and that means we need to be more intelligent about our emotions and those of others.
As interest has grown so have the number of players and programs. There many diferent flavors of EQ available - different measures and models and methods of development. There's much agreement and in some disagreement. This Emotional Intelligence At Work lens will provide you access to EQ news, information and various resources along with perspectives on development. I welcome your questions and comments.
