Getting the right fit: To get the correct size riding helmet, first measure the circumference of your head just above the ears. Make sure that it is neither too tight, nor too loose. That will be your base measurement for helmet size. Some helmets come with extra padding that can be used or removed to create a better fit as well.

From thin comfortable schooling tights, to jodhpurs and full seat breeches, there are choices for every rider. Some kids will appreciate the wider variety of colors and styles that are available for schooling tights, while others prefer the more traditional look of breeches or jodhpurs.

Breeches Versus Jodhpurs - What is the difference?
Breeches are very similar, and are made out of the same material, however the length of the inseam is the discerning factor. Jodhpurs have a full length leg, going all the way down to the ankle, whereas breeches tend to stop above the ankle, or even mid-calf. Breeches require that you wear tall boots to cover them, whereas jodhpurs are worn on the outside of the boot, with a jodhpur strap to keep them down. Jodhpurs are the required dress for equestrian competitions.

Get a better grip, and protect your hands from blisters. Choose a comfortable pair of gloves for protection, grip and warmth if needed.

For young beginner riders the zip up boots are quick and convenient. Older children may prefer the lace up boots that they can fit more accurately to their foot/leg. A good riding boot is important for comfort, as well as safety.

Choosing a good pair of socks is essential. In cold weather you'll need a great pair to keep your toes warm, and likewise in the summer you might need a lighter pair that is more breathable. My kids favorite are the socks, which are a very thin pair of socks, sometimes worn over their regular socks, which make it easy to slide into boots, and they come in a great variety of fun colors and patterns.

Not only do you look and feel more like a rider in chaps, but they provide extra grip. It is important to get a good fitting chap, that is neither too wide and tall, nor too small. Just remember that they will sag slightly after they are worn in, so you want them to be right to the back of your knee bend when you start.
